Fred and Pat came to visit for the holiday weekend and it's been a blast! We've washed, vacuumed, sewed and had a great time! Fred brought me a beautiful commercial Kirby upright vacuum (ComVac) and his new Pfaff sewing machine to demonstrate. We made curtains for the basement windows from the Maytag display fabric and cleaned u the mess - hours of fun!!

I only got a few pictures but Fred and Pat will add more. We're cooking dinner on Saturday, Pat made an incredible strawberry-rhubarb pie. (and yes, this is the new kitchen!)

Pat got to see the tangling ability of the 49 Westinghouse and was duly impressed. Many loads of wash, laughs and wine later the washing was nearly done and smelled so nice coming off the clothesline Sunday afternoon. We didn't get much more of the storms over the weekend except for a fast-moving shower yesterday evening.

Sunday evening, we met some friends of mine for dinner at a wonderful old Italian steakhouse under new ownership. The life of the party - we had a great time and an incredible meal!

Today, we had a small cookout with my parents. Grilled hamburgers and baby-back ribs, homemade angel-food cake, fresh strawberries and whipped cream. A great summertime meal to start the season!

I know that you guys much have had a fantastic time!!! Pat that pie looks so so good. I love strawberry Rhubarb pie!! Is that broiled bacon that I see there for the BLT's?

My it seems you guys had a great time! What a great weekend to get away and have some fun - besides the storms the weather was quite beautiful this memorial day weekend.

You know some SS panels for that 18 series KA would blend quite well with the SS KA fridge......

Looks like everyone had a great time!! Love the pixs Greg, would like to see the rest of the new kitchen sometime. I LOVE what I see so far. <:

Greg, Beautiful kitchen! Congratulations. What is the name of the color you used on the walls? I hope that the space to the left of the range is sufficient for parking additional dishwashers or other appliances. At one of the Amish restaurants, Der Dutchman, I believe, in Sarasota, I have eaten a fabulous crumb-top Strawberry-Rhubarb pie. I know y'all enjoyed that pie. Glad that you missed the storms.

My late Aunt Eleanor made a wonderful strawberry-rhubarb pie that won her a blue ribbon at the Nebraska State Fair one year. She also did a killer sour cream raisin pie, which sounds gross, but was amazing.

That sound like great fun! Which Pfaff sewing machine did Fred bring with him? Curious how they sew and if they are still the workhorses they once were, since Viking was bought out last year? Glad you had a great weekend, Todd

Sour Cream Raisin... the recipe the recipe...please... my all time favorite! There was woman from our church that made the best sour cream raisin pie...it was the first pie to disappear at any church function.

I have never been able to find a good recipe. Would you mind sharing it.

Morgan

Morgan, unfortunately Aunt Eleanor's recipes are MIA. Alzheimer's took her rather quickly, and then there was an ugly dispute between her two sons that no one in the family wants to get in the middle of. Rumor has it that my second cousin got ahold of her kitchen stuff, but nobody knows for sure.

As the older people die off, I've been losing contact (and interest) in my extended family: Too much money (that none of them earned, just inherited) has made them act pretty tacky. Either that, or they're actively waiting for folks to die so they can go on a spree. Plus, a lot of them have joined whacked-out churches that have made them intolerant jerks. Our gene pool has definitely not evolved for the better ;-)

Have another cup of coffee and let's have another piece

Let me look around, I may have a recipe for the raisin pie - I have a few recipe boxes I bought at sales and there may be something in one of those or a chance in my grandmother's recipe box as I seem to remember a pie like that. It's not something I could put in my own mouth - but I remember being around one more than once. One of Velma's favorite was mincemeat pie - ugh.

Thanks for the compliments on the kitchen - I'll try to get it cleaned and ready for a few more pics this weekend. My camera also has a video function that I've experimented with so who knows, maybe we'll jump into the 21st century with both heels!

Tom, the color is called Cinderblock from Ralph Lauren. I've had good luck with the colors from Ralph, but he makes crappy paint so I take the chips to Menards and have Dutch Boy mixed to match. Half the price and twice the quality.

There isn't room on the left side of the range for anything except a light switch - we pushed the space as far as we could to the garage door to get more cabinets in.

Hi Greg
Your kitchen looks fab! Nice job! And the food looks delicious...especially that lattice top pie! Yum! You are such a great host! Thanks for sharing the photos

Greg, Your kitchen sure looks different since I was there in 2005 (conventon) Nice job! It looks like you have my all time favorite dishwasher too. Would love to see some close ups.

Sewing

Greg and I had a blast sewing the curtains. The Pfaff is in the background here - a 2048 Quilt Expression. It is a great machine. I'll let Greg chime in - he tried it. Here is Greg using his Bernina - also a great machine - I was very impressed.

Domestic Heaven with the Best of Friends

The memorial holiday weekend at Greg's was nothing short of amazing.
It was like domestic heaven on steroids.
First, the new kitchen. I absolutely fell in love with it.
The layout is great, the equipment is incredible (as anyone who knows Greg can imagine), the sink is awesome (except for that Waste King disposer ... JUST KIDDING JEFF!!!!!), the appliances are spectacular (no surprise there either), the overall flow ... unbelievable.
I had a ball. And needless to say, we ate like kings, I mean queens!!
The vintage appliance playground is also very well stocked.
Greg's selection of washers, dryer, vacuums and small electrics is incredible.
Just having the ability to pick from an assortment of machines at times was overwhelming.
It makes you wonder what all the appliance poor people do ... how boring.
But best of all was spending time with 2 very amazing, wonderful friends.
Greg and Fred, you 2 are the best!!!
The conversation, stories, laughter (often to the point of weakness) was exactly what the doctor ordered.
The road trip with Fred was great fun ... none stop conversation, time sped by unbelievably.
Spending time with Greg's mom Carolyn, an absolute sweetheart, and her husband Ken was fantastic.
What great people. And now I know why Greg is such a wonderful person.
And I can't forget Newton.
He is definitely the cutest ugly dog I know.
He stole my heart and I know he did the same to Fred.
To be sure, I'll be riding the high from that weekend for a very long time.
Thanks Guys!!
Pat

Number 3 best city

Greg,

Maybe it is because of you that Omaha is rated the number 3 city to live and work in by Kiplinger's!!

Looks like a huge amount of fun, and friendship.

Also great to see at least some of your kitchen. Mucho hard work went into that I'll bet.

Martin

Paging Morgan Frazer

In regards to the Sour Cream Pie.
A church lady I know makes this pie also and it is very tasty.
It didn't appeal to me at first, but is really good. Not overlysweet.
Here is her directions. hope it turns out.

2 cups of sour cream,1 cup of raisins,1 cup of brown sugar,2tbsps of flour, pinch of nutmeg,2 egg yolks.
Cook all till thickened and add to a cooked pie shell and chill.
The church ladies are kinda vague on their directions.
I think she soaks the raisins in hot water first to plump them up.

Omaha isnt a bad city to live in...but you dont move there on purpose. I lived there for 2 years and I can tell you from my experience with the threat of tornadoes and what not there I was a wreck. My partner thinks it would be cool to see a tornado....I have seen one you can keep it.

Wish I could be more specific with the directions, but you know how old ladies are!

Not a problem, that is how my grandmother cooked.. a pinch of this a dash of that...rolling boil, I learned from the best.

I am sure they would have soaked the raisens!!!

Morgan

Great sewing machines! I love that 1090, classic machine that will last for years and stitch quality that will never be beat. That Pfaff looks like a fun machine, is it still made in the Czech Republic? Those curtains look perfect. And I'll have a slice of rhubarb, with whipped cream, please.
