Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Nate--My '86 looked very much like your Kelvy; the recessed lint filter and the agitator caps were identical. My agitator didn't have the wings up at the top. It had narrow blades that were in a ramped configuration, but too narrow to stir things up, much. My '06 definitely has better turnover. I do miss the spin-drain.

For reasons I cannot fully explain, my '06 Frigidaire TL is gradually becoming my daily driver. Except for the friggin' reduced maximum water level which is a nuisance to deal with, the little plastic beast has grown on me.

I've started doing an old-fashioned overnight soak with my white loads and they're coming out great! I'm using the FL'er mainly as an extractor these days.

I actually wouldn't mind having one of the Frigi-Westys pictured above.

:-D

Oooh! I've seen those. The top vanes of the agitator almost reminded me of a Dual-Action config, only on a single-action unit. I thought those were cool-looking, but it's good to know that they weren't that hot in terms of agitation.

It's okay to start gravitating to your top-loader; I used the heck out of the Kelvinator when I had it, and enjoyed it immensely. And besides, we're allowed to be fickle. I go back-and-forth between machines frequently. It's okay :-D

Someday you'll use the front-loader again, and you'll use the top-loader for <s>spin-extraction</s> chip storage, and that's fine, too.

If I find another one of the (as Greg calls them) "fooled-ya" 1-18s, I'll hold onto it. I've still got the pictured control panel, so it'd be good to go, and then maybe we could give you something else to play with.

The thing about the Westy machines is that they're nothing short of a nightmare to take apart (I wasn't kidding about the sheared bolts), and I've yet to come across one that didn't have something wrong with it, however minor. The machine I showed above had a transmission that knocked constantly and made a bonking/banging sound when the tub indexed (which apparently had the Australians in stitches, if I recall ;-) ). It was pretty, and high-maintenance, kind of like Shannen Doherty...
