Along with some beautiful 1957 GE Washer, dryer and combo brochures today we have the monstrous 113 page Ronson Cook 'n' Stir Blender Owners Manual and Cookbook for download in Automatic Ephemera.

I know I've seen a few people mention here in the super forum that they own this machine and I can imagine that the manual would be a big help. You can download it here.

It is , like all Ronson products, STRANGE!

I have one, it has a two speed transmission, thats the knob on the right, the one on the lef tturns the heater on and off and the center is the thermostat, it actually is built like a tank, very heavy, you can set the thermostat on say 212, turn the transmission to low speed, push one of the low speed buttons, and make cooked pudding or pie filling without having to stir anything. But if you turn it to say 300 or so it will BURN something delicate like a pudding, so you have to be careful.

It should come with noise cancelling earphones, too. Friends thought it was so neat until they tried it. It's one thing to run a blender for a few seconds and another to run it for minutes on end while something cooks.

I always thought

that these were so neat. However, what I wish I could find in decent condition at a price I'd be willing to pay is a Ronson VariFlame Table Chef.....

Lawrence...

I see those Ronson Table Chefs on ebay all the time and at very low prices. This one, listed as a "cast iron camp stove" (hello ?) is currently listed with a starting bid of $24.21 + $20 to ship with no bids but I have seen them for half that. I had one years ago and it was a cool thing.

can's paste URL on AOL...try ebay Sporting Goods > Outdoor Sports > Camping & Hiking > Cooking Supplies > Stoves...crazy!

I also have one, and the cookbook. I bought it as my parents used to have the non-cooking version of this blender when I was a kid and I really liked how it looked and the strange large blade. Their blender was still working fine but the white plastic cap for the plastic jar (same shape as the glass jar and black cap on the Cook'n'Stir) started to disintegrate and smell very bad many years ago and it was thrown away.

I can't imagine how someone could let this stir something for more than a minute or two and not getting seriously annoyed by the noise!

Watched a video on YouTube on a Ronson Cook&Stir blender-the machine sounded like a large electric drill.Bed,Bath& Beyond no longer has the Cuisinart machine-same idea as the Ronson-but couldn't cook and blend at the same time-excepting at very low speed. The Ronson and the Cusinart heat with a small heating element,Vita-Mix and Blentec use high speed blade "friction" for heating. So whatever you are cooking in the VM or Blendtec is WELL bleneded besides being "cooked".Explains the strange "scrambled eggs" made in a VM machine.Best to "scramble" them in the VM-then cook the eggs in a pan.Best way to scramble the eggs for my Cheese-eggs-is with a Sunbeam Mixer!

Ronson made two sizes of the butane burner. The smaller was copper colored and the larger one was as pictured above. Once we had a power failure and I used the big one to boil 8 cups of water to make drip coffee in my Corningware drip coffee maker then took it to all of my neighbors. We all had total electric homes, but they said if anyone could make coffee during a power failure, Tom could.

With a little time to waste I conducted an experiment to see which appliance made more noise, the Ronson Cook n' Stir or my Simac Gillato/Ice Cream maker with the little compressor inside...the blender won hands down. I think Cusinart makes a blender that cooks called a "Blend and Cook Soup Maker." I'm sure its quieter than the Ronson since it has no transmission but the Cook n' Stir is a lot more fun to look at, nicer design too.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't those super-powered blenders like Vitamix use friction to heat food? A friend of mine has one and on high speed it's no quiet thing for sure. I assume if you had to leave it on for several minutes the result would be "Silence of the Lambs" soup suitable for sucking through a straw.

Thats the video I watched of the Ronson Cook&Stir machine. At the first speed range sounds like a drill. When you shifted to the other speed range-it sounds like a wood router.
Yes,Vita Mixes can cook by blade friction-and indeed the product is so well mixed you can't tell what it was.The VM machine has to run for several min for the cooking to work-and you should start with hot ingredients. The noise is then just as bad as that Ronson blender. As I said before-I don't "Cook" in my VM-too noisey and too weird a product.Do the cooking on the stove or microwave.Just use the VM or Blendtec to prepare the things for cooking. The VM machines I use most often are commerical ones-they have a sound hood or dome over the container.Much quieter. If you ever go to a "Coldstone" Ice Cream place-their VM hooded blenders are like the one I have.I have an XL-the 1.5Gal size-its not that noisey-despite its 15A motor-has a belt drive. My Blendtecs have the sound hood, too.Otherwise its the "Chain saw in the kitchen" sounds. The commercial sound hood blenders are worth it if you use them daily as I do.Many places sell them online.I have bought these machines over the years. One of my VM machines coulkd be a collectors item of sort-its the one involved in the lawsuit filed against VM by Blendtec for plagerizing a jar design. The VM machines and jars still work fine. Some dealers sell sound enclosures for VM "home" or "bar" type blenders to muffle the noise-just be sure its approved by the VM company or you will void your machines warranty.

by the way...

I saw that Cuisinart "Blend & Cook" thing yesterday on a site called nomorerack.com for $75.00...guess it was/is not that popular. I'll bet it's as quiet as a very noisy church mouse.

I have never heard the Cusinart heat blender run-so don't know how noisey it is-the display for it at Bed,Bath,Beyond was a static display-none of the machines on display will work. They now carry Vita-Mix blenders. No demo.
