Roper DD Question

I've dealt with this once before but did not know what it was, what makes a DD WP washer agitate, neutral drain and not spin? The motor and pump run in spin, and they stop when you release the safety switch, but the basket won't actually spin? Is this a spin clutch issue and is it worth repairing. It's a very cheap 2005 Roper set that I may acquire.

see the motor shaft is direct with the pump, no union....

for the other side of the motor is a union or coupling they call it, there are 2 pieces with 3 fingers, one goes on the motor and the other on the tranny, and theres a big rubber bushing that connects the 2, for whatever reason these fingers break and the machine will not agitate or spin, motor will run and pump will function, but thats it.....this would be equal to a belt on a belt drive unit

this little coupler cost under 10 bucks......about 7 dollars more for the heavy duty one, a 15 minute fix

Drive coupler.

These little guys are extremely easy to replace. They often fail in such a way that they will agitate, but not spin.

A DD will nearly always drain because the pump is driven off the motor directly. Check if the pump is leaking, however. If it is, you must replace it and file the rust off the motor's shaft. That pump must slide on that shaft like butter. If you pound the pump, it will leak.

NON SPINNING DD WASHERS

A broken drive cupeling is NOT the problem if the washer agitates and does not spin this would be impossible. The first thing to check if the washer basket does not spin is to take the cabinet off and run the machine in the spin cycle. If the silver clutch drum is spinning the transmission is ok, You then have a broken plastic brake cam or some thing caught between the tubs or a stripped basket drive block etc. If the clutch drum is not turning you have a transmission problem.

I also have had machines that a baby sock got between the tubs and would not let it spin, hidden in the back.....who would have thought the machine would not have the power to move the tub from something so small holding it back!

The machine spins most of the time now, but sometimes you have to help it or power it on and of a few times until it makes a clunking sound. I'm not very familiar with the DD's, I can replace the pumps, motor and couplers but haven't had to venture much past. The machine agitates fine and drains fine, but sometimes when it comes time for spin, it's like the drain just keeps going. When it will go into spin, it makes a light clunking sound that isn't present when the machine won't spin. Spinning the basket and/or powering the machine on and off a couple of times will make it work usually. When it finally goes, you hear the clunk sound. I was thinking there might be something with the clutch, but I don't know for sure how the DD machine goes from neutral to spin, that would be where to look possibly.

Hi Tim there is a problem in the transmission, if you replace the neutral drain kit it should work fine or you can replace the complete transmission.

Drain

Just curious, how does this machine go from drain to spin? I thought the DD machines reversed the motor to do this, the transmission has no electrical connections does it? Just trying to understand how it works. There seems to be more to it than just forward and reverse.

the motor reverses to drain,after the drain interval times out
motor switches off and as it slows tranny clunks into gear-
motor restarts in same direction and completes spin.
Early DDs,up through about 1985,are spin drain.
one of thes days i will disassemble a spare later DD tranny
to see if i can figure out how it does the drain>spin shift
with the motor pause....

the only thing i can assume is that it has to do with pulling the agitator shaft out of gear. when the motor first reverses direction for drain it also has to pull the agitator shaft into netural. when the motor stops then starts up again in the same direction it just goes str8 to spin. if you ever stop you washer in the middle of the drain cycle then start it back up again it will start to spin even though it's only suppose to drain.
