I do not not know what is causing this in our dishwasher. I am getting tiny round rust spots on dishes and flatware. AND they don't come off. I am really at a loss. We have a Bosch dishwasher and am presently using Finish with the powerball, but have had this happen with other brands as well. Any thoughts? I appreciate your input.

This is usually caused by iron content reacting with chemicals in the detergent. Has something changed with your water? I notice more iron/rust in the water when the city workers open up fire hydrants full-blast to flush them out.

Is this an ongoing problem, or did it develop recently?

We have the same problem with our silverware. I had thought it was because I do not pre-rinse my dishes, just scrape and load them. We have had this with our KA Superba, Frigidaire Gallery and now with our Bosch. I have used all the Cascades, Finish and Other brands and still have the rust marks. I posted about this before and believe thier are others with the same issue. I have just hand washed them with SOS periodically if I thought it got to bad looking. This picture shows the marks we get

This happens to me as well. I wondered if it was because I was using the cheaper Great Value brand powdered soap. I've changed to the more expensive Cascade Complete and will see if that helps. Maybe it's acid from food residue that causes silverware and metal utensils to pit and corrode and deposit the rust on your dishes. Using the rinse-and-hold feature on your dishwasher might be another solution....

We had it happen with 2 x 80 piece sets of $500 a set of SS dinnerware.

Returned it and picked another style and have not had the same problem since.

The cheap setting we had before that, we got rid of due to the rust marks.

So maybe its a manufacturing defect in the cuttlery.

Rusty spots

Possibly caused by some other mild-steel utensil shedding rust particles, or an acidic sauce like 'Salad Cream' being left upon the steel too long. It could also be salt, if someone throws salt about at the dinner table.

It is nice to know we are not alone, and the suggestions are much appreciated. I will rethink the pre-rinsing! But one flatware set which is suffering is a good one (so I thought!)
