Samsung TV

Hey everyone,
I cashed in a few more frequent flier miles and got the new Samsung 82” MU8000 series tv. Overall I’m not impressed. I know you guys all hate my fridge but I have to say I hate the TV. I’ve calibrated myself and had geek squad out. Any suggestions on how I can improve the picture.

What resolution is your signal and how close are you sitting to it? Even at 1080 HD @ 82" I hope you are a good distance from the panel.

Perhaps it isn't a resolution issue, what about the picture isn't impressive? Did the GeekSquad calibration do anything beneficial?

As for folks not liking your new fridge, don't sweat it. Not everyone chooses to embrace technology.

When you change stations, does the TV show you the resolution, IE 1080 or 720?

82" is pretty big, if your local stations are broadcasting at 720, or even low bandwidth 1080 its going to be really visible on such a big screen. What happens if you try a Bluray or Netflix with a 4K resolution

How close are you sitting? For a screen that size you should be 12-15 feet away from the screen, if you're closer than that and its not a 4K source then you're going to see some pixelation.

According to Samsung you need to sit about 20 feet from the TV as the optimal distance.

Well there is "calibrating" and there is "Calibrating".  The geek squad is not knows for quality work.  A number of years ago when I got my second HD display I had it professionally calibrated by someone who know what they are doing.  He has well over $10k of equipment and it took him 3-4 hours to get everything right.  I did pay $350 for this and it was worth every cent. 

 

As I have 3 other HD display around the house, I bought a moderate priced meter and have used free software called HCFR on my laptop and achieved very good results doing my own calibration.  It does take a lot of time and there is a fairly steep learning curve but I find it fun, interesting and challenging. But be warned you need to get into the deep service menu on most TVs to get the desired results.  But you can do serious damage there too if you are not careful.  For the faint of heart there are decent disks out there like WOW and AVIA that will guide you though the basics of setup and give a very good result  using basic controls.

I have the Samsung MU8000 TV in the 65" size.VERY pleased with mine.what picture mode is yours set to?Try "Cinema-Movie" or "Natural" mode.Mine was set to the "Eco" mode as from the factory.The TV was liefeless and dark.These have a photocell like in some older CRT TVS that set picture brightness according to how dark your room is.The Natural mode or Cinema modes defeat the ECO mode.Have you tried playing a 4K DVD thru the set?I have with mine and the picture is beautiful and stunning.No cal required.Since I am happy-won't bother with paying someone to calibrate the set and possibly causing more damage.If the set is miscalibarted you can contact Samsung service Dept and if you connect the set online-they can reset the adjustments to factory remotely.Play around with the TV some more before taking it back.You may find a mode that suits you.An interesting thing--my Samsung 4 K DVD player communicates with the Samsung TV-You turn on the player-and the TV comes on!all ready to go!I am sitting about 6' from mine.Think the size I have is as big as I am going to go.It was a job installing the TV myself.The manual suggested two people to do it.I would suppose that would really be true for 75" and 82" sizes.
