saturday was bendix day

Lee with his lovely model D and Kris taking delivery of the bendix lt that was over on shoppers square for a week or so.

Firstly the cabinet is in as close to showroom condition you could expect from a 50 year old machine.

So of course I was over yesterday and by late afternoon we were washing automatically, this was followed by another 3 loads.

So what was wrong with it, well the door boot was the major problem, fortunatly a later bendix boot fitted and so far all else seems supple and leak free. The pump valve needed easing into life and the pressure system cleaned out, we then had it washing but it soon became evident the pressure switch was intermittant to say the least, so an old one (off a hoover) was put in and seem to solve the problem, so it was now filling and spinning correctly. Though not with the low med and high section connected.

What i can't get over is the blower running all the time, it's bearings are good but it's overall drown adds considerably to what would be a fairly quiet machine.
The dryer does work so kris was reluctant to remove the belt and not have the option of the dryer, I think i would rather remove the belt and just enjoy a quieter washing machine.

Anyway, just to let whoevers interested know,thats what happend to the bendix lt.

Just noticed my greasy finger prints on the side, they've been cleaned off of course.

It seems that Wales is doing well on the Bendix front and the North East with Ricky

It just so nice to see these machines coming together and giving pleasure.

Oh Mathew, Bendix all over the place and this makes Kris`s third now doesnt it? this washer dryer, the bolt down in the house and bolt down in the coal house?

Glad you could sort out the gaskets, still available from Qualtex etc, Is this one a keeper then in the laundry?

Wow, very smart, glad its gone to a good home. Mikey and I own one of these, but its not in the greatest of cosmetics and it leaks from the filter. But it works, spins and tumble dries stuff superbly!

Anyway, I got a Bendix on Monday at 11 at night, half the size and half the weight too! It was a Bendix Super Compact 7179! As I'm busy most of the time, I could only pick it up at 11 at night so in the end I was carrying this little bendix around a street light less street at 11 in my best clothes after a night out! It was advertised on Gumtree with no picure, and between Mikey and I we own the other 2 models of the 3, so we were desperate for a 7179, but now we have all 3 Bendix machines! The machine works, motor is a bit scratchy but the machine works Picture below of my 7179.

I hoped it had found a good home , I have a workshop manual ( if you don't I think you might , I'm not sure who has what here,) I know what you mean regarding the dryer fan it makes a racket during washing , apparently US models had a third solenoid to switch fan on and off when needed.
One thing they don't really work off " cold " water , if you select 3, 4 a warm wash they fill with a mixture of hot and cold so cold water only will be at the temp of incoming water, the heater doesn't kick in at all. If cold only fill 1,2 ie very hot or hot will only heat to a certain temp, water has to be a certain temp or thermostat switches off early, so will result in a lower temp. No prob for quick play, but it does require hot water. In a way if "free" hot water can be sought theses are very ecological as it only uses electric to boost temp.

Mine has developed a thermostat problem, number 2 should be about 65.c but now goes on to heat to near boiling.

To get a 40.c I run hot tap ( from combi boiler ) and let it fill on a number 2 , once full press 4 and it washes at 40.c

To get 60 I do same but press 2 and then press 4 once it's heated to what I feel like 60 is.

I tend to press 4 as it does cold rinses , then press 1,2,3 to get longer spin.

This is my only washer so some may think a faf but still love it.

They are solid machines well done!

Hi wow that is tremdous looking very nice indeed I am very pleased Lee got the model D and you having the same.Not the most prettiest of looking machines particular on the bottom right hand side of the cabinet. Loving the water level on large load wow. It only gets used for drying and spinning the loads just now, and in time will get be brought back to her former glory. Congraulations on your latest arrival

Mark- I'll take a photo next time I'm up, the lid reveals the soap port of course as well as the dryer filter.

Mike- yes definatly a keeper, though his poor neighbours,they could hear it over the tele, he likes the roar of the blower running, as along with it's size it makes him think of a commercial laundry.
The next problem is where to intsall the boltdown bendix, I'f it wasn't for all his cookers as well, mofat range has gone along with two other cookers and in has come a 30's double width gas range in green and cream. I tell you I can't keep up lol. Oh and also if your wondering, the hoovers now in my garage and the aeg novamat is moving round the place looking for a nook to tuck away in, funny isn't it those two machines must have near enough the same wash capacity, yet the bendix is four times the size.

Chris- oh those eudura bendix are a much more sensible idea, great you've got the set.

Fido-Yes it's seems so well put together, angle section frame with each panel removable, just about as far from todays non servicable, can't get into machines as you could imagine and suspension that could control the most out of balanced load.

Richard- No we don't have the service notes or the instruction book, but I have found the ones Paul posted earlier in the year via the searchalator, so was able to get the basics.

Yes definatly a machine requiring hot and cold fill, but thanks for confirming it won't heat to the correct temperatures unless hot fill, that did confuse me, non timed heating on 2 only getting up to at best 40oc. He's got a solid fuel rayburn providing hotwater in quantities that make it almost your civic duty to have a bath when you up for an evening, so as you say great to test on cold water but it will be run off hot and cold soon.

And interesting to know the american models had a clutch on the blower fan, that fan running i feel really spoils the machine, in the overall cost of manufacturing the machine would it have added hugely to the cost. Overall though it gives a great wash and given how much airflow that fan gives i look forward to seeing how the dryer performs in practise.

At the moment though, it's pegging out weather.

Al, sold on ebay, he got it some months ago, installed and enjoyed it, but once this bendix and the gas range came along a few things had to be moved on.

Ahh OK, I think I saw that and indeed posted it in Shoppers Square. Glad to hear it has been moved on to a new home as it looked like a handsome cooker - and Canadian too rather than the later British models
