Saved from the dump

A couple of weeks ago Simon posted some UK ebay links, one of which was this Fishglow dryer. No bids on it so, as I was in teh area last Saturday (collecting a vintage vacuum cleaner) I thought I would contact the seller, and indeed it would have been in the dump by now if I hadn't. I am not sure pof its exact age, but would reckon on mid 1960s - the seller told me it still worked, and it did

Interior

The hole on the top left takes the exhaust to the back. The temperature control has three positions: Hot, Warm & "Fluff Dry"

The latch is a twist close, rather like many ovens of the day. I thought these machines were Bendix actually, but maybe they were "badged"

Another member posted that this machine (or at least this design) had a wheel to drive the drum. You cannot see it here but indeed it does - the OUTER drum, which moves as well as well as the inner drum, and it goes at a fair old lick too

I would not like to have tried this with heat on - the elements are behind the grey panel and they were covered in dust too - here is a close up of the motor

There was even a live spider inside it!

My Tristar made short work of most of the dust

And it has a nice soft dusting brush so the cables could be cleaned without disturbing them too much.

Calling UK members

Those who have been at my home know that I dont really have the room to collect laundry appliances - its bad enough with 123 vacuum cleaners and 40 odd mixers - so, although I will hold onto it for the mean time I will be more than happy to pass it on to another collector - it does work and it is built like a tank. I will scan the instruction card later but the Fisholow logo on it looks rather like the Parnall logo, so maybe there was some tie up there

GREAT CATCH!

It is interesting to see that the warm, moist air flows through the door after going through the white circular diffuser to be fed into that small port that encases the filter.

And the door style does rather resemble a UK cooker, does it not?

Is the exhaust pipe a standard 4 inch (100 to 102mm) jobbie?
Is the heater about 2,500 watts?

It appears to me that this machine blows in hot air rather than suck it out. (BEHAVE!)

Would that lead to flocking the room with lint?

firstly well done on picking this up and saving it

Well Chestmike is the man who can shed light on this model.

But I have just dropped of the Bendix version of this machine in Cardiff for Mike to collect for a freind of his, I think this name was used on models sold by one of the electricity board shops

And yes the one I dropped off is driven by a small rubber tyre on the drum

Thanks for confirming that at least some of my brain cells are still intact - some of these memories are from so long ago that I get concerned that I get these things wrong.

Interestingly mine has similar heat marks on the inlets at the back of the drum, although its probably in a bit better cosmetic condition, although yellowed with age, and it needs a good clean. Now all I need is someone to take it off my hands, although I certainly wont dump it.

Toggles (I hope you will pardon the familarity, but I like the name) I will check out the details when I get home from work

The lady wot sold it

was an absolute delight, very friendly and helpful indeed. It was left in a house that they had moved into just three weeks previously which was built in 1970 and still had lots of its origional features intact - I would have LOVED it. Actually I would love to have the money to afforded it!

It had the origional Hygena (pre MFI) kitchen, although they were going to rip that out when they knock the kicthen and the (huge) utility room together. And, although it would have been nice to have kept the units, I could see why they would change them - it will be a fantastic room when it is done. I suggested she put the units on ebay .....

The machine looks great and is just that little bit different to the more usual Bendix.

I had never heard of Fishlow before Mike mentioned it a month or so ago. Then one crops up on ebay!

Did they do a Fishlow LT, I wonder?

The insides look beautiful! lol. Rob would have run a mile on seeing all those poetential cobwebs. I take it that you have set to work with a vac or two, to undo all the years of muck accumulation.
