I've been viewing this site for a few years now, and finally got the courage to join. I'm from Canada, and have been facinated by laundry appliances since I was a kid. When I first stumbled across this site, I was surprised to find that there are others with such an interest. I found so much info here, and am interested in learning more about vintage machines. The old classics are a far cry from what they have today. There used to be over 15 individual companies, and so many unique designs, but now there are only about 4 North American companies carrying several so-called "makes." These surviving veterans have also changed drastically, and are mundane and cheaply built, is appears. I enjoy seeing all the classics on this site.

Welcome Home

I'm underneath you in Hamburg NY on Lake Erie. We spent a few weeks each summer in Crystal Beach Ontario.

Thank You

You seem like a swell bunch of folks. Yes, I'll have questions to ask about some of the classics we all love. I may be able to answer a few from others. But for now, let me share with you my machine family history. When I was growing up, my parents had an early 1960's Inglis washer and dryer. For those who may be unfamiliar with the name, Inglis was Whirlpool's Canadian counterpart. Then the Whirlpool name came to Canada in the 70's, and now Inglis is a budget make by Whirlpool, similar to Roper. Anyway, the washer was naturally the belt drive setup, with all the traditional Whirlpool-ese sounds, and the dryer was the old style belt and pulley setup with the belt-driven fan. They were white, and the washer had suds saver. I remember watching them as a child. The washer had the black bakelite agitator straight out of the Whirlpool (it had the "W" on top, and the Surgilator vanes). The lint filter was the brush type, and the tup was speckled. The agitation had that famous "woowoowoo" sound, followed by the neutral drain, then grind-click into spin, and the sound pitch would lower slightly until the tub came to full speed. The pump operated with quite a howling noise, which was characteristic of the old WPs. I believe they came out with the silent pump sometime in the 70s. The dryer had a loud blower; you could hear the outside exhaust vent for a distance, which was characteristic of the WP belt driven blower. At the end of the 70s, my parents bought a 79 Maytag set (3rd up from BOL). The washer had the small tub, and turquoise agitator with fabric softener cup. The dryer was the first of the then new "stream of heat" setup (big load), replacing the old HOH. After 30 years, the dryer is gone, but the washer still works. It's the old setup with the spinning tranny. The dryer my parents now have is a Kenmore. It has the front mounted lint filter, and I think the mechanics were made by Maytag. That's my Inglis history for you;)

Welcome!

Oh, you're going to have a blast here - and how nice to have some more 'Canadian Content' here on the board! My first vintage washer dryer matched set is an Inglis - they're my <daily drivers> down at the house in Ogden - so I share your admiration of that grand old brand! This is a great community and if you ever have any questions or problems - just ask here; chances are someone has come across a similar problem or situation and they will be happy to share whatever information they can!

Greetings

And a GREAT group this is. I don't contribute that much, but I do like to check the machine-of-the-day and see what everybody else is finding in their neighborhoods.

It's an unusual addiction, but I figure I could be smoking crack. . .so choose your poison.

Robert is terrific. He allowed me to tour his basement and watch him do a few loads of laundry in the machines of my pick.

Gordon is another favorite. Need to know about Kenmore or Whirlpool. . .he's your dude.

Welcome.

Dan

Welcome aboard!

I am sure you'll have lots of questions answered and may have answers of your own for questions others here may have.

Greetings. You know you are getting close to downtown Toronto when you see the Inglis sign flashing quotes of the day.

Welcome Gary all the way form Texas!! Glad you finally got the guts to join for real. You'll still learn a lot. And don't forget to ask questions. BTW, the Kenmore dryer your folks have now, is all pure Whirlpool.

woo-woo,wooHOO

One night my M109R motorcycle forum was down & out of bordom I typed 'Automatic Washer'. I've been a member here over 2 years(been that long since trading the junky M109R for a Star Stratoliner). Anyway, washer love is not shared by many, but if you've ever gotten a hand mirror & flashlight to view a wig-wag,cams/pulleys,self-cleaning bead filter, etc while getting an earfull of woo-woo,this must be the place! Really are cool, helpfull & eclectic machine-heads here,Gary. Enjoy!

A great group of enthusiasts welcomes you!

Welcome to the group, Gary! This group is fun, and the members are a great resource for information and advice. And yes, isn't it amazing to find so many "like-minded" guys (and gals) interested in washing machine stuff! Seriously, thought when I was younger that I must be the only one in the entire world with this interest. Alas...I'm not unique after all!

Regards...Brad
