Am seeing this more and more when searching around CL to see what there is.

If a thing is sold why not take down the advert? What is the point of keeping something listed that no longer is on offer? Has CL made changes recently that prevents listings from being removed or something?

I mean if seller can go back and change the listing to add *SOLD* then why not just take the whole advert down?

If the listing is like eBay and has a set time then maybe this is to blame for the problem, or people that are just too lazy.

Faced this issue myself when searching for a laser printer. Initially found a nice HP Laserjet 4 machine a little ways away. Upon contacting the seller, was informed the unit was moved on at least a week prior.

While I'm here... I also dislike those that don't clearly indicate a price in their listing. The printer I eventually settled on (A much newer HP Laserjet 2420dn) had two prices listed. "$25" or "$45 ready for pickup."
Eventually, after a 1.5hr battle in freeway peak traffic (there was an accident of some sort) the lady informs me the unit is free - citing "toner costs," although that was absurd given I found generic cartridges on FleaPay sold by Australian sellers for as little as $30. About $50 for a HP-genuine piece that had simply "Expired"*

*I say "expired" because toner is toner. Unless one is dealing with stuff from 20 years ago, I'd say its doubtful it goes bad. For most print-outs, which are thrown away soon enough, generic or even "oudated" toner is more than enough.
A previous Canon LBP3200 machine (which wasn't mine, and thus didn't come with) lasted 10yrs on its toner and printer fine till the day it ran out. The replacement looked fine too.

Lazy

I sell tons of stuff on CL and you can delete the ad. I always do because then you start getting spam. The lady I bought my KDM-21 from still has the ad up! lol

I was just going to post a Hiring Status for the Restaurant and they now charge $15 dollars per post.

This charge is also for Real Estate Listings, Cars and Trucks etc.

Well, for the most part, not many people post in a Newspaper anymore.

Usually within a few hours of posting, my inbox starts receiving resumes from Europe. Summer People looking for jobs. They even send videos of themselves which is helpful as far as hearing their actual English Skills.

What gets me mad about CL in this area is we have a a certain real estate broker that has to have his listings always on top of page one and a kitchen cabinet/hot tub dealer doing the same. Flagging them is useless as they just repost over. I wish they would inforce the one post every 48 hours that certain people feel does not apply to them.

I get annoyed with the ones if you click for private sellers, and all these dealer ads show up.......and by the hundreds....the same ad, over and over......

or ones who will post in the viewed add either 1.00 or 5.00......and then click inside to find they want s bigger price......that seems to be a bait and switch sort of thing.....if the viewed square says its a dollar, then its a dollar.....

ones that puzzle me, is selling a machine, that is broken, and still wanting a high price tag.....if a unit doesn't work, that's scrap value, nothing more...

WollaPop is a new one, it is a pay site, but seems to eliminate a lot of this nonsense.....for one thing, you have to post a pic of yourself in order to join and sell of buy things....

Previous Contact

If you have made previous contact with an ad on CL and the ad has been removed, you can still reach the seller/poster through CL email. Might be some of the reasoning behind some people updating the post rather than deleting it.

Probably because they're like 100 years old and had their grandson place the ad. Now's he in jail because he got arrested for selling drugs. They can't remember what they had for lunch, let alone what the password is to their CL account, so they can't delete the ad.

Do they even have a computer to access that internet thing?

Just my theory anyhow. :-/

I have done that several times, the last was when I had my car for sale last May, I was getting several emails a day, even after it had been sold and the ad deleted, but with Craigslist, you can bring an ad back up for a certain period of time after it has been deleted, so I edited it removing all of my contact info and adding SOLD in several places throughout the ad. Within a day the emails stopped so I deleted the ad.

Flag - It

Guess if it bothers you, flag it.
I would assume flagging an ad would block any additional email communication, wouldn't it? It should.

And sometimes, you just gotta flag your own, right?

Only reason it gets up my nose

Is such listings add to the clutter and chaos of finding anything on CL.

Between the spam like scores of listings from various single sellers, and scams you have items that are in theory NLA (sold).

*ones that puzzle me, is selling a machine, that is broken, and still wanting a high price tag.....if a unit doesn't work, that's scrap value, nothing more... *

You see that on eBay as well. Plenty of appliances including vintage to ancient in sorry condition and nonworking yet seller wants big money. That clapped out rusted heap of a Launderall comes to mind. *LOL*
