hi guys
i need advice on sending detergents overseas, how to pack them properly etc, i have sent one box already but i know it wasn't packed properly, i forogt to fill the empty space around the box so it was a bit loose, the box however was wrapped in several layers of paper. I probably should have used bubble wrap but i was in a rush because if i didn't send it then then i would probably have talked myself out of it (mailing costs etc...). I dunno what state it will be in when (if) it arrives but i just need peoples advice.
Much appreciated
Matt

I have shipped American detergents to the UK before, both liquids and powders and this is what I did.
I put each bottle in a plastic shopping bag (the cheap kind you get almost everywhere these days) and then bubble wrapped each box and bottle. I put them all in a box, taped it tightly and sent it off.
I sent it express mail ($$$$) and sure enough the US Postal Service sent it out the next day to the UK, but the Royal Mail didn't deliver it for three weeks! I was told by the USPS that the Royal Mail doesn't always recognise express boxes from the US, only express mail envelopes!

Shipping Ideas

Hi there -

Check the link below for UPS's Global Advisor. This is a good starting point for any international shipment. Choose your source and destination countries to see what import restrictions are in place. It's always a good idea to check before you ship anything internationally - detergent or otherwise! There are many unique, country specific requirements that must be met. Sending something that's not supposed to go -- or that doesn't have proper documentation can slow down or stop a shipment in customs. Remember too that all shipments are subject to customs review as well as local duties and taxes in the recipient country. The US Postal Service also has good information for international shipping on www.usps.com

Sending internationally with a private carrier (UPS/FedEx/DHL) also allows for tracking throughout the shipping process. Postal tracking doesn't jump countries.

It's important when sending liquid that the item is carefully sealed, bagged, protected and packed. It's really best to use a new carton for fragile/liquid items. Once a box has been shipped it loses its structural integrity. The data on the carton seal at the bottom of any box will tell you how much weight can safely be packed and what the burst strength is for that carton. Another good reason for using new cartons would be for any claims that could arise from shipping. Insured packages are subject to inspection and used cardboard is a no-no! Remember too that newspaper used as packing material will compact during shipping -- that's no-no number 2! Finally, allow 3 to 4 inches on all sides of your item when packing and don't leave any void space empty in the box.

Anything more caustic than detergent would most likely fall into a Hazmat category. (Even perfume is considered a Hazmat for shipping.) Not to say that such items can't be shipped, they just have to be packed and marked appropriately.

I hope that this helps! Sorry to be so wordy!
