This is a cool unit that I just got.
Great shape except for a crack in the butter door.

Inside

The butter door has a crack - but at least it's there.
There is a tiny narrow drawer in the center of the two larger drawers. It really cool - but pretty much useless unless you want to store 2 pieces of celery.
Overall- it's a pretty massive unit - It makes the Crosley look small and the Crosley is a pretty good sized box for the 50's.

Interesting . . .

I didn't realize that Servel ever made electric refrigerators. Does it use a conventional cooling system with a compressor, or does it have an ammonia absorbtion system like the gas-fired units?

The Crosley is quite similar to the one my family had when I was very small - I remember the round circle on the door.

Hey b t

My Aunt and Uncle had the same era Servel, though the doors
opened fron the right, and I don't know if it was propane
or electric. It did have those wonderful door handles, though
I don't remember the fancy detail in the centers. The ice maker looked the same. Not bad if the only thing broken is the
butter compartment door. I'd love to have that as a daily
driver. Burn that electricity like there's no tomorrow; have
Koolaid with fat ice cubes everyday all Summer long. Yay Servel!!!!

compressor

It's a standard compressor type set up.
I find that pretty interesting as well since I thought that they only made the gas style models.

makes me thirsty...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the very cool deluxe Crosley with the ice water tap in the door. You filled a reservoir in the door via this little swing-out trough and then pushed that round button above the handle and filled you glass. Of course when we were kids my mom would never allow us to traipse through her clean kitchen on a hot summer day and get grimy finger prints all over her spotless Crosley...we drank hose water.

Buick and Crosley

Wow - that's a pretty good spot on the 55 Buick - Only a true 50's car lover can make a positive ID by only seeing a sliver of tail fin!

The Crosley in the pic next to the Servel is actually my Parts box. It does have the water dispenser inside. I have two 56 Crosley fridges the other one is complete and runs great. The one in the pic next to the Servel is a project- but overall still pretty nice.
I just didn't want to scrap it. If anyone knows someone who might be interested - I can let it go super cheap.

Here is a pic of my other 56 Crosley next to it's Kelvinator buddy.

Wow, I didn`t know 1950`s refrigerators had automatic ice makers yet , Being thats the case with this one -I wander if it has electric defrost? With that ice maker the evaporator is bound to frost up quickly.

Good Lord,

Seeing that Kelvinator brings back so many great memories! My Great Uncle & Aunt had that exact same fridge. IIRC they bought it new circa 1947-1950, and took it with them when they moved off the farm in 1960, and into the house they built in town. That baby was so quiet, you had to stand next to it to hear it run. It was still purring when Aunt Alvera passed away in 1987. Could you post a pic of the interior?

Roger, IIRC, Servel was the inventor of the auto ice maker. Whirlpool acquired the company so they could have the ice maker t4echnology. Roger, the street I essentially grew up on was in the Spring 1961 Houston Parade of Homes. The house next door to ours had a gas Whirlpool with auto Ice Maker.

Gold Lettering

I remember the people across the street having an electric Servel just like the one in this advertisement. It was already several years old when I first saw it. I also remember several of these arriving as trade-ins at the appliance store I worked at. Servel sure wanted you to know there was an ice maker inside since big gold letters spelled out AUTOMATIC ICE MAKER on the outside of the freezer door as well as more lettering on the inside, and how could you miss it? The ice maker and the bin took up almost half of the freezer.

Somewhere among my "stuff" I have the seperate owner's manual that Servel provided for the ice maker and it's a hoot! Servel explains the unit's operation with this gnome-like character called "Yahoody," the little man who turns the light on and off in your refrigerator. Yahoody explains that "ice circles" should not be "hoarded" since like men, they grow beards (frost) when they get old. The entire manual is like a comic book. There's certainly no fun element in today's manuals, although I guess Yahoody was a little much. I will try and find the booklet and post some pics.

The neighbors with the Servel eventually replaced it with a coppertone Whirlpool bottom freezer with "Ice Magic."
