Servis 308S ran again!, then didnt!

well i finally managed to get a paddle for the Servis, ordered and fitted a new door seal and fixed a small pressure chamber leak, ran a wash and started having fun

we ran a normal load of colors though on no. 5, unplumbed the 9534 temporary in case something went wrong, but luckily the machine washed and progressed as it should...however, 1st spin then came alot and we heard alot of metallic knocking, we thought it may have been wires, one of the struts. then we discovered the right shock absorber was causing it, it was shot of course, so im just wondering, i have spare Hotpoint 9534 shock absorbers, would they fit the machine?

There is evry reason why they WONT work despite being the same design, size, etc etc

Even if they feel the same at being springy dont be tempted to use them unless they absolutely are the same specification.

Remember.....

Servis has amuch heavier tub weight being made of enamelled metal compared to a lightweight plastic Hpt one.

The concrete tub weights are different weights and placed in different places.

The weight when fully loaded with clothes and maximum water levels would make the Servis heavier im sure and if they are different spec suspensions struts they may not be able to take the weight successfully.

The Hotpoints have a totally different centre of gravity compared to servis when they launch into spin due to the motor and concrete blocks and the suspension needs to take this into account to stay stable.

Reason upon reason not to take the risk.

Can I ask if the tub is suspended on springs at the top and the dampers are at the bottom?

If this is the case then it is the springs that take the weight, the dampers mearly try to control the tubs movements.

Also if this is the case then I would try them a complete pair the worst you could do is damage a damper or two, it is a pity you cant strip them as they are very crude in the way they work

this machine is so worth restoring so don't give up

at the top there's actually straps made of felt (i think) and the shock absorbers at the bottom

The Servis machines dont have springs at the top, just a seatbelt type material strap to stop the drum fro rocking back and forth-nosupport whatsoever.

The suspension takes all the weight.

VTG Machines with suspension at the bottom usually rest on it. (Funnily the British makes mostly)

VTG Machines with friction dampers (asbestos and rubber pads) sit on springs at the top the the cabinet (Indesit/Zanussi/Bendix/Continentals)

thanks all, will take a pic of the 95 and servis shocks so you can get a better idea, another thing i forgot to mention, the motor isnt sounding healthy, its fine tumbling to the right but makes a scratchy sound to the left
have done a few test vids but heres one so you can hear the noise.

hmm could be motor bearings a bit dry or just brushes worn, the easiest way to check is take the motor out and spin it by hand and listen, try removing the brushes and spin it and listen...........could even be the drive belt is shredding.........difficult to hear on a computer, there is nthing that cant be done with these machines so keep it up
