Mostly Hype:
There were some localised problems, as others have mentioned, but most of the excitement was watching Channel 2's "Storm Tracker Two" team (I remember when they were just called weathermen), go into full drama-queen mode.
They bellowed warnings of gloom and doom, they squealed with excitement over the prospect of Atlanta getting washed out to sea, they assured us that earthquakes, locust plagues, and the return of the Yankees were all imminent. There were more computer graphics than NASA used to put men on the moon, none of which were remotely understandable.
What we got was some wind and some rain. Feh.
