After 15 years in Connnecticut, Shaws is closing all of it's stores. 11 will go to ShopRite/PriceRite and 5 will go to Stop&Shop bringing their total number of stores in this small state to a whopping 89!! That means that almost every town in the state will now have a Stop&Shop...talk about a monopoly. Even though Stop&Shop has this monopoly, I think that one ShopRite store does the business of 3 or maybe 4 Stop&Shop stores combined because of their great weekly sales, and bi-annual Can-Can sale. Anyone out there agree?

Can-Can't Beat ShopRite!

We have Stop & Shop here in NJ, too. Nice stores, clean, well-stocked, but ShopRite will win every time in pricing. They used to go head-to-head with Pathmark, but since A&P took them over they've been losing ground. Plus, P-M open 24 hours=stores always dirty. Never time to clean properly.
 
Thats just the beginning. Shaw's is up for sale. My partner works for them and Supervalu is breaking Shaws apart. Maine, NH and VT stores are up for sale. and it looks like Hannaford and Stop and Shop might get them. Here in the Boston area they were told that Wegmans may buy the city stores. Boston North to Hannaford. We will see what happens in the very near future. Also they are going to be closing stores.

If I am not mistaken Hannaford Stores are non-union, I don't know about Wegman's, but I know Stop&Shop is definitely a union shop. I hate how these companies play games with peoples lives. A person could spend upwards of twenty to thirty years or more working for a chain only to have that chain bought out by a competitor. I used to work for Finast, and I saw it happen time and time again. Like I said Massman, I really hope everything works out..It's funny though, if you google the news of these stores closing, it makes no mention that the other stores are up for sale.

I agree that Shop Rite will give Stop and Shop a run for their money. S&S has enjoyed an almost monopoly in our area for too long. Quite frankly, though, I am not sorry to see Shaw's exit Connecticut. They came in and took over mostly all of the old Finast/Edwards or Grand Union stores and never did any improvements other than changing the name outside. Their stores were almost universally filthy, ill kept and smelled dreadful. There were probably one or two exceptions to that, but the one in Fairfield was particularly awful.
The nearest Shop Rite is currently 13 miles away and I often go there because of the sales and the fact they are well stocked and well kept - owned by the Cingari family and operated in Stamford and Norwalk under the "Grade A Shop Rite" name.

I agree with you angus

I too travel about 10 miles to shop at ShopRite in Brookfield. This is also owned by the same family, and is also called Grade A ShopRite. The store is so busy I often have to wait for a parking spot. The store is very clean, and the deli is great. Sales are excellent too.

Mike- which town are you in? I'm in New Milford, which is about 6 miles from Shop-Rite of Brookfield. You're right, they do have great sales, although the layout of the place is weird.

Jerry I'm in Danbury near the state line, you are right the layout of ShopRite is weird, especially since they expanded into the old Walgreens, it's like you are in another store, aside from the regular store. You must remeber Finast in New Milford, I used to shop there when I lived on the other side of the mountain in NY, and then when it became Edwards, now it is Big Y. and I haven't been there in years.

Walgreens is still vacant- they expanded Shop Rite into the old Namco. I remember the Shop Rite from when it opened. It was the rival to Shopwell and Waldbaums, where I worked while in high school and into college. I grew up in Danbury, but on the other side- a mile from Brookfield.

I do remember Finast- became Edwards and Big Y- I work about 1/4 mile from it in NM. So you must have been over in Pawling or something.

I was over in Pawling actually, and that is right, I'm sorry, you are right ShopRite did expand into Namco, that empty Shopwell at night (opposite end of Kohls Plaza) is pitch dark at night, and quite an eyesore, and I also used to shop sometines at Waldbaums where BBB is now...but that store was always empty, 15 registers, 1 cashier open, and no one waiting on line...I think I know why A&P closed.

Yeah, Waldbaum's was a really busy store when I worked there- that was before Shop Rite and Stew Leonard's arrived. I know, at the end it got pretty spotty. It's also a shame about the Shopwell building- When I was a kid and moved to Danbury, it was brand new, and it too went downhill. I don't know why nothing is done with that shopping center. It was supposed to house a Lowes there before they built by the theatre. doesn't make any sense to leave it decay-
