Well this popped up for sale very local to me and I’m very excited about it. Couple questions… age? I am thinking early 60’s but not sure. Second — Suds Return on the dial but no Save/Drain buttons? Is it just operated by the dial? Third — is this considered a Highlander? Unsure if the perforated tub signifies anything regarding Highlander or not. I don’t have a serial number yet, but I will be going to take a look at it tomorrow. Just want to know more info before I potentially buy it.

Even if it's not a perfect fit for what you want in your collection, these are rare and don't come along often. Unless you have a ton of other things in your collection you might consider getting it.
It looks like it's in nice condition.

I know that control panel as that is the matching washer to the dryer we had until 1976 when my Dad bought mother a new set of Whirlpool Silver Anniversary edition machines.

When they brought the new set and took the old, I got to keep the dial/knob from the dryer as a toy.

Maytag A500 1961-1964.

 

Inner tub indicates little to no wear so it was either lightly used or properly loaded.

This dates from around 1965. I checked the owner's manual for an A500/A500S and for the suds return model, there is the drain or save button so maybe this had a timer dial swap out. You will know if you see one or two drain hoses, but I have never seen an automatic suds saving Maytag without the switch.

I noticed a couple posts on here with similar dial and non-button sud saver setups. Is this maybe an earlier feature which later added buttons?

The easy way to tell a Highlander of that time from the regular Maytag series, is by the construction of the cabinet.  As you see, the Highlander has a stainless band between the cabinet and top.

Looks like the 1964 A500 I parted out. It was given to me by a friend that let it sit 2 years with water in the tub after it died and wouldnt pump out. It was like new but sadly the spin basket rotted out on the bottom from the standing water all that time. The reason was the start winding burnt out in the motor. Had this been drained and a new motor installed when it happened it would still be running today. If you buy it and want spare parts I did save the trans. Plus switches and Timer dated 1964. I also have the agitator and stainless lint filter but cant remember who I promised that too.
