With Frigilux asking in another thread: "Can someone tell me which Frigidaires are Multimatic and which are Rollermatic? Is one of them the type of machines with the space capsule agitator (the mid-to-late 60's, I believe) and one of them the 1-18's?"

I thought it would be fun if any one who would like to take a picture of the inside of your Frigidaire washer(s) and point out what year and the mechanism of the washer, I'll post mine if you'll post yours /SMILES/S2.gif

1957 PULSAMATIC (with the 1958 Pulsamatic Agitator Column Installed, the 1957 Pulsamatic had a gray pulsator and all black Agitator Column)

But where is the black balance ring on that 1957? *grin*

Thanks for posting those photos Robert. Not too many people are able to post all those years and models.

Boy that 1955 Pulsamatic is a wicked looking thing...

A great thread!

Thanks Robert, this is a most interesting and informative thread. It's lovely to see product development clearly displayed in a format like this. I see Unimatics and a Pulsamatic..is a Rollermatic much different to these? I'm an interested learner!!
Thanks for posting this, Denis

Laundress's question

I think they changed the agitators and transmissions in an attempt to work out design flaws while retaining cleaning power. The rollover in the early Frigidaires was so intense that it tangled and knotted the clothes into a huge cloth donut. This isn't such a problem in the Jet Action models.

Why did Frigidaire change agitators so often?

Laundress we really have no way of knowing what was on the minds of the engineers. I suspect what Tomturbo said a while back was true, GM threw a lot of money in R&D at Frigidaire. Not only did the agitators change, so did the wash tubs and the outer tubs and the controls and styling, every year with the exception of 1951 and 1954.

What am I missing?
So lets see what are we missing,

We need the following interior pictures to complete this puzzle, then I can make a page of these pictures and post it to "Vintage Fun Stuff" so we can always reference this.

1949 Unimatic, I believe there is only one surviving model with the original 1949 solid wash tub/harmanizor and its in Gyrafoams collection. Steve can you take a picture for us?

1956 Unimatic (Peter?)

1963 or 1964 Mutlimatic with the redesigned Three-Ring Agitator and 12lb Tub (Jetcone has one).

1965 thru 1969 Rollermatic with the Deep Action Agitator, we have a number of them in the club collection, can someone please take and post it in this thread for us.

1970 thru 1979 1/18, Austin get your camera out!

Wow, this is a great thread! I've always been confused by all the different "matics" Frigidaire had. I see there was a Unimatic and a Pulsamatic in '57. Was one a higher-end model than the other? I would imagine they had two entirely different mechanisms since they had different names?

And this is probably old news to everyone else, but I don't think I've ever seen a Frigidaire with a perforated tub. Live and learn.

I can't wait to see pics of more modern machines; that space capsule agitator is my favorite.
