Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Nice Box!

If a little large for a single person, LOL! This is an Amana 25.

My next-door neighbor has one like this, in Avocado, as a garage fridge. It never skips a beat, and it is definitely not coddled. The ice and water system hasn't been connected in years, of course.

I will confess here - if I absolutely could have whatever I wanted, and running costs were no object, an early '70s Amana 22 would be my top choice. I've never been a fan of ice and water in the door, because the systems behind the convenience can be a little unreliable. My mom and dad had a GE Americana that never worked right from Day One.

My search for a top-mount is because A) I also like Amana's top-mounts very much and B) The cubic footage is more reasonable, with a lower running cost, for one person. A vintage Amana 22 or 25 would probably carry a running cost of something like $40-$50 a month these days.

An Amana 22 is below. Nice, nice fridge - very TOL and expensive in its day. As always, thanks for keeping your eyes open - I need all the mojo I can get:

Love the woodgrain trim inside that Amana!

But boy, being an old SxS, it must cost a small fortune to run. I imagine the folks selling it will have a very heavy wallet after selling it!

Just For Grits 'n Giggles....

....Here are two better, larger shots of an Amana 22.

Those door handles are die-cast, chrome-plated metal - sigh!

This one is new enough to have the Ye Olde Fayke Woode Graine inside; models a couple of years older had the typical "lemon smoke"-color plastic of the era instead of the synthowood.

This is the same model seen on The Bob Newhart Show, in Bob and Emily Hartley's condo at Thorndale Beach North in Chicago; Emily's was Harvest. On the Left Coast, Station 51 on Emergency! had the Coppertone version to hold the groceries needed for Gage and DeSoto's attempts at cooking.

Until the Amana 25 shown at the beginning of this thread was introduced, the 22 was Amana's biggest and fanciest machine. The 25 was, of course, created as an answer to the GE Americana, which was the dream fridge of the late '60s and early '70s.

Sandy,

<span style="font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif;">What do you think would happen if I were to start channeling my mojo for you once again?  You might become inundated with Amanas!

The one we had still cooled properly. It started freezing water in the drain, and was a PITA to keep unthawing. Tried a few fixes, nothing worked. Also the ice auger was finicky, wouldn't work for 2 weeks, then would work for a day, then go out again.

If not for those problems, it would still be residing in our kitchen.

Mojo!

Tim:

I'd be very happy to be inundated with Amanas, trust me!

Kenny:

That auger problem is exactly the same as the problem my parents' Americana had. No one could fix it, and Dad was working for RCA/GE at the time. There were jokes about maybe calling in an exorcist.

Could this have been one of those models that Barbara Hale claimed used no more energy than an ordinary light bulb?

She didn't specify how many watts that ordinary bulb was rated at, though.

No, thank you. They're gorgeous, but I'd never want a SxS with water dispenser or ice maker. For me the whole point of a SxS is to have the frequently used items on the top shelves so I don't have to stoop or bend. The SxS where I last lived had the whole top 1/4 of freezer taken up by machinery, defeating (for me) the whole purpose.

Am staying with a friend until co-op ready. He has a top-freezer he bought a year or so ago. He was between jobs at that moment so he bought the cheapest thing that fit his needs. I now wish I'd sprung for the difference between what he could afford and the cost of a bottom freezer.

Coppertone Amana 22

Just thought I'd add a little to the thread--I have always loved 60s and 70s Amanas. Found this copper tone one on CL last nite and posted it in the shopper square forum. We all love pics...so here are those from the listing. Nicest bit about this one is the interior which doesn't suffer from gaudy-itis. Quite a clean and still stylish interior compartment--not style eye sore at all.

Allen:

That Amana 22 is a fridge that ought to be saved. They're getting kind of rare; the survivors are forty years old and more now.

That Coppertone unit is the twin of the one seen in the kitchen of Station 51 on Emergency!; Gage and DeSoto were in and out of it all the time.

south bend posting gone

I came across both those Amana SxS's while searching CL and admired them both. Thanks for posting all the pics, everyone. Oh, fyi - goatfarmer - the posting is deleted...anyone from aw.org decide to buy it?

Here's an older model Amana fridge, which isn't Sandy's pick, but Slim Pickens Second Hand Shop near Akron-Canton, OH has it.

Another close to Sandy's pick : http://nh.craigslist.org/app/4484500240.html

That white Amana Bottom Freeze "energy saver" ?

THAT is my fave modern Amana Fridge. Always liked the handles on these. Preferably all black with aluminum trim kit for black acrylic panels. THOSE look sharp! They are boxy looking as hell when in a small size kitchen, tho.

Here's the black one I like

I wound up with a JennAir side by side, with doors done in brushed aluminum trim and black acrylic over the textured black .
