A neighbour of mine in Ogden has been telling me for weeks that she was going to have a huge garage sale and that I better be there because she was sure there was stuff I wanted. She was right - I found a pile of stuff, including this Silvertone clock-radio.

Check this out, the speaker faces the rear of the cabinet and there's a timed power outlet in the back. I guess this could have been used to start a coffee pot (maximum 660 watts, though...)

I tested it - clock works and so does the alarm, but we can't pick up any AM signals in Ogden... I will have to bring it back to Montreal and try testing it there - that will have to wait until next week, though!

"a timed power outlet in the back. I guess this could have been used to start a coffee pot"

My mother had a clock radio in college, and she told me that she used the switched outlet for a percolator. I guess if the music doesn't get one up, the fresh coffee smell will.

I'd be a little concerned about power draw, but apparently she got by just fine. I suppose it all hinges on the coffee maker and how much power it needs, plus how much the outlet can safely supply.

outlet

a 1960 GE clock radio i have has a timed outlet-seems that may have been common
around that time.My GE is the usuall series string 5-tube.
That silvertone looks like it is also from around 1960.

Wowser!

When I lived in the 'burbs as a youngster, our neighbors across the street had this model and they used it to start their percolater! They lived for caffeine and no doubt loved this feature. Not everybody used a clock-radio of this kind in the bedroom. My parents had a later model that looked like this but was AM/FM, they used it to turn on a table lamp in the bedroom to assist in waking-up. Enjoy!

Nice radio! Does it have a lighted clock dial? It's got the Conelrad triangles so it should be at least as old as you!

;-)

lighted dial

some of my '60s clock radios feature"electroluminescent"clock dial lighting-
nice pretty blue-green illumination in most cases though a '67 motorola i have
has an orangeish glowing electroluminescent panel.Orange glowing neon bulbs are
the most common clock light method but most of mine with neon are flickery if they
work at all.

radium dial

i have one wind-up alarm clock from around 1920 that says "radium"on the dial-
radium paint is still there, but does not glow anymore-will have to try a geiger
counter on it sometime LOL.
There is an early '80s song by the B-52s where part of the lyrics is
"the deadly hands of the radium clock". could not find out when radium dials were
phased out,but seems they went out of favor because of the radiation after the '20s
