xraytech:

Silverplate with matching china and glassware was popular in the '30s, International made some patterns, and Oneida did, too. Oneida's Deauville, launched in 1929, was really nice, looking much more expensive than it actually was; the china looked for all the world like Haviland. Bird of Paradise was another.

Matching holloware (tea and coffee pots, trays, bowls and platters) was available in most lines. The Oneida patterns listed above all had holloware; Grosvenor and Coronation were two more. Coronation is especially interesting, because it was launched to celebrate the coronation of King Edward VIII. Oneida had a strong U.K. presence, in addition to its American one, and so the pattern was introduced in both countries. Unfortunately for Oneida, the new King's desire to marry Wallis Warfield Simpson caused a constitutional crisis in Britain, resulting in his abdication after less than a year as King. So, the pattern was renamed Hampton Court for the British market, to erase any lingering memories of its beginnings as a product connected to a coronation many Britons wanted to forget.

Collecting flatware (cutlery in the U.K.) is one of the most fascinating collecting fields I know of. There's a story behind almost every pattern.

Silverplate

Hi Sam. I also have a lot of silver and silverplate.

My grandmothers FB Rogers SIlverplate in pattern Remembrance.
A lot of silver coin pieces from my wifes grandmother, (very old).
Our own pattern of Sterling which we started several years after we were married. Gorham Pattern = Newport Scroll.

I also picked up a service for 24 of silverplate at our church flea market. FB Rogers. Pattern is Exquisite. I think it was the Rectory's. I guess our priest and the housekeeper did not want to polish anymore. lol I got the 24 piece set for $15.00. I would say a nice bargain.

I cannot remember what our originial silverplate pattern is, but I will check and update.

First Love

Sam, Your pattern First Love is very similiar to Equisite. I like to collect the silver or silverplate because each set or piece has some history behind it. I will always cherish my grandmothers set. It is also nice to know that I have our churches. The next barbecue I will put out the silverplate. What polishes do you like using? BTW: I was also from PA. Born in Wilkes Barre, lived in Plymouth. Shoot me an email if you would like to chat.

The book value for the service for 8 of the First Love is approx $375, I paid $105, shipping included, I got it to match my Duncan Miller which was locally made here in Washington, Pa until 1955, Prices of it are very here like a crimped 8 inch bowl cost me $95 where I can buy on ebay and get same thing for about $30-$40.

Ray, I am not sure where it is that you are from but, I am South West of Pittsburgh along the West Virginia Panhandle border. I will have to email so we can chat sometime. As for the Polish, I prefer Wrights Silver Creme for my silver, what do you use?

Sam

Polish

Hi Sam. I use the Hagerty Products. Silver Foam or Polish.

I bought the Hagerty SIlver Dip for this badly tarnished silver from the church. I just have to get my act in gear to do it.

I understand that Wrights is very good. Have you used others and like the WRights brand the best?

Wilkes Barre and Plymouth are near Scranton. When we lived in Plymouth, it was on Highway 11. or West Main Street as they called it. It took about 2 1/2 hours from New Jersey.

We also have a lot of china/crystal that was handed down to us from family. I have some Cambridge crystal from a great aunt. It looks bery close to the crystal glasses above.

As for any modern flatware sets I don't like anything newer than the Interpur stainless that I use except for the Cutco flatware which I want badly in the ivory handles. Someday I may have the money for it. I only have 3 knives, kitchen shears, 4 table knives, a meat fork, spreader, and basting spoon. Very expensive but great quality, off hand price wise all I can remember is the basting spoon alone cost a whopping $37.00 but well worth the $300-$400 I have in it. Hopefully to add their flatware soon.

That's not mine, that is a set of Stainless handled Cutco Silverware, just a pic I found to show what I am looking for, except I want the ivory handles to match my knives. that set for 6 is probably about $400-$500 maybe a little more but would be worth every penny, warranted for life just like Tupperware or a Kirby.

We have a nice set of 1810 Rodgers we began collecting shortly after getting together back in 82. I beleive we have settings for 8 now and many of the extra serving pieces. Doesn't come out of the chest much anymore save Christmas.

We have a nice set of 1810 Rodgers

Hi Petek. What pattern is it? I have a lot of odd pieces of Rogers silverplate laying around. If it is your pattern, you are welcome to have it.

Let me know

Ray

Avalon

I collect Rogers Avalon (a.k.a. Cabin) silver plate. It started with my grandmother's Sunday dinner place settings. When she passed away, my aunt wanted to throw that "junk" away.

Rob.

I found this stainless set at an antique store. It is Orleans Victoria. It is not fancy but I like it for informal dinners with friends. Judging by the labels in the box, this looks like a sales display set. It is missing two teaspoons, one salad fork (just bought on ebay) and 5 dinner forks (just bought two on ebay). Replacements.com has this pattern, but is expensive. ($2.50 each on ebay vs. $10 each on replacements).

Detail pic.

I have cheap but nice looking stainless from Wally World for daily dinning and a 4 place setting set of Onieda Act II that was my mom's for formal meals. Act II is no longer made.

Mom's Oneida Act II. Mom really liked this pattern, she bought it one place setting at a time until it was discontinued. It has a brushed finish. Act I with a bright polished finish is still made, or was until recently.

I have silver plate and sterling. The silver plate is Oneida community and my grandmothers Oneida too. My sterling has been in the family since 1910 and is Towle Williamsburg pattern. I also have a quadruple plate silver tea service from 1890 and was a Christmas present to a family member. Talk about polishing!
Crystal is June pattern by Fostoria and Kylemore by Waterford. Good china is Caryle by Royal Dolton.
