I thought I would start a new thread for this rather than continue to hijack the existing one! The discussion on sewing machines prompted me to unearth my old '50s Singer 15K80 and have another go at getting it to work properly. When I bought it a few years ago I found it kept breaking the thread and I soon lost interest. I did get my mother to try it at one point but she also concluded it must be faulty.
Using servicing and operating information obtained online I now have a better understanding of how the machine works, although I've not found any specific fault on the machine. It is possible that I was putting the bobbin in back to front, as that part of my instruction book has a bit torn off and I can't read the text.
I found we have a sewing machine shop in town and I went there on Monday for some new needles. It is not a proper shop, just a converted garage next to the guys house.
Anyway, I put it all back together today and it seems to be working OK now, no broken threads anyway. I was trying to adjust the thread tension to get only the top thread visible on top and only the bottom thread visible underneath. To do this I kept loosening the tension discs but eventually I was getting very loose stitches with stray small loops of upper thread. I'm not too bothered about perfect tension though, as long as I can sew with the machine.
The link is for a YouTube video I found useful for threading instructions.
