GM Skinny-Mini

Hi Todd

Fun machines, when these came out these broke all records for the most cheaply built laundry appliance ever built,  We have one in our museum, its a must have machine if you collect laundry appliances.

This and the Vega both came out of GM about the same time.

I have lots of lint filters for theseTodd if you need one drop me a note and I will send you one.

If I came across one of those in Poppy Red I would find a place for it even if it was the middle of the kitchen. Love those Harvest Gold Warges in the back of the 1st picture.

GM built skinny mini

Hi Darrell.

It would be hard to come up with a list of things that didn’t break on those.

Years ago I knew a small Frigidaire store north of us here and he said when those came out he sold 48 of them the first year and ran 52 service calls Which is a very high breakdown rate for a new product.

When I was still in high school I was working part time with a contractor and we remodeled the customers kitchen in Greenbelt Maryland and I know she had to have service come out to get the thing to spin before we were even done with the kitchen project lol

HATED those things! Saw a lot of them under warranty.

Awww, come one. We know you loved these along with the 1-18's :D

Just our POD a few days ago...

Not much difference between GM-built and when WCI took over leaving off the Product of General Motors while retaining the same crap inside...

Would rather just make way for that 1-18 set, no matter what!

Actually the WCI version was a MAJOR improvement over the GM version, the washer part is completely different on the GM machines.

The GM washer mech broke new records for the cheapest way to build a washer transmission and drive system.

That's the one I remember my aunt and uncle in Anderson, Indiana having when I was 3 years old!  I think theirs was green.  I just remember that weird looking triangular agitator but I have never seen one since anywhere except in pics here.  My uncle retired from Delco-Remy up there.

Target market?

It's strange that they built this machine so cheaply, as I think their intended market was people with a fair amount of disposable income, not people who couldn't afford anything better. The ones I've seen pictures of in the wild were usually aboard a large boat like a houseboat or yacht. And if I recall, their ads included depictions of the washer on a second floor of a large house. Something to toss the beach towels in after coming in from the pool and whatnot.
