New is not inherintly bad. I have said it before.

My son and his fiance purchased a new spec home with BOL Whirlpool Appliances.

I found this site, spent a week blind "drunk" enjoying it all and made a bad choice.

I bought a 30 inch Flair and two KA Superba dishwashers.

My plan was to gift my new appliances to my son and install the vintage ones for myself.

I have used both of these models before.

Reality: They will need a lot of cleaning and tinkering. It is only a matter of time, until a service part is needed and that grows more difficult all the time.

Justifying my behavior to the oustside world is expected, but it hadn't occured to me I would need to do it here.

I have reached a time in my life where easier is okay.

My Maytag appliances do everything I ask of them.

Don't walk away. Just take it like a "man". After selling over 2000+ washers here in Europe (vintage at that!) I have been told I didn't know what I was talking about when I wrote about European washers.
After lying under all sorts of rollermatics trying to coax them back into work...been told to wait until I actually see one once before I critize...
And have, myself, said so many stupid and - inadvertantly - hurtful things over the last months, it is a wonder Robert even lets me look at the pictures, much less post.
So forget "it", whatever "it" was. I betja anything, it was not meant to hurt...
You know the old joke:

No apology is necessary.Not everyone has the genes to service,and keep up with vintage appliances.Ask those who know,it can be a full time job hunting parts,keeping them serviced,and running,etc. I'm glad there are those who take the time to do it,and so openly share their knowledge here.

All that is asked around here is to have an interest in vintage appliances,and to have an open mind.Everyone has their own opinions on new VS vintage,Maytag VS Frigidaire VS Norge,Whirlpool VS Kenmore,turquoise VS pink,etc.

Dearest Kenny,

Not turquoise versus pink - turquoise and pink. Oh! To die for, simply to die for. I remember my grandfather had their last Frigidaire refrigerator painted pink by the local car painter (real baked on finish! Only 49.95!) So it would match their flair range.
Somehow, harvest gold just never quite gave me the same feeling...although it is warmer...
Guess I just like pastels.

Stove parts may not be that hard to come by, IIRC two separate auctions won by members featured "GM Frigidarie" stove parts. Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to to find out which members (if any) have parts required.

Ok, so you bit off a bit more than you can chew at the moment, don't go kicking yourself. on the up side be happy you thought of the idea and get busy restoring/fixing the items in question. It may take awhile, but once you have your vintage appliances up and running YOU will feel that much better not only using them,but taking pleasure in a job well done.

As much as I love the old vintage stoves and dishwashers I thnk I'll stick with new ones in the kitchen and hopefully when we find our new house it will have a 2nd kitchen that I can dress up with working vintage appliances. I'm leaving behind our Miele dw, my KA convection and the old 3 door fridge and heading into the unknown, but I know that I will definitely get another Miele dw eventually to replace this one.

It is nice to see what there is someone that is thoughtful. I bought new a coulple of years ago when I could not see fixing my mom's 16 year old Whirlpool Fridge. I would not, and could not have fixed it even if i would have wanted to. She loves the new Amana with the Fridge on the top. I have always felt that pratical is a good thing. I love my new washer and dryer, and i am sure that your son and future daughter-in law will be tickled pink.You always have a way of making me laugh with your great sence of humor. You are a Fab lady!!!!! Don't ever forget that

Your mom and I have the same type frig. I absolutely still love my Amana bottom freezer. I have had it for 3 yrs now, and the only thing I would change is the color. And I may do that one of these days.

Everytime I walk into the appliance store (1-2 times a month) I always look to see what models they have. What I have noticed lately, is the plastic inside the fridge, seems errr, more "plasticy". Lower quality that was even made a few years ago. I'm not sure if it is my imaginiation.
I mainly got this fridge, because, I am tall, and hate bending over. (Was married to a greek for years LOL, please no comment Togs;-) )
And it also reminded me of the Coppertone Fridge we had back in 1966.
The frig is great, the customer service from the store is horrid!

On July 8, 1962, my family purchased our GE model TC429WC 18.8 cubic foot Spacemaker with Frost Guard in the roll out bottom freezer. GE's rollout freezer sacrificed some capacity with this design, but it was certainly the easiest bottom freezer to use. Others, like Frigidaire, required you to open the lower freezer door a full 90 degrees before you could pull out the sliding basket that held the food or the upper tray that held the ice service. In 1976, the compressor started going. My parents could find nothing else that they liked since this design had been cast aside for the side-by-sides. Our kitchen island was an African mahogony lyre end library table that was just the perfect height so that the final 1/2 inch of the refrigerator door cleared the edge of the table when opened all the way. They had GE service come out and replace the compressor and, outside of an evaporator fan motor or two and two defrost controls, she still is working and looks like new except now she is in my basement. When an evaporator fan starts going, it sounds like you have puppies inside yipping, yelping and whining. We had trouble with the hot gas defrost system twice, the first time in 66. It did not defrost and built up frost in the evaporator so no air could get through. I think it was the loss of gas from the little capillary bulb on the defrost thermostat that took the system into defrost and then back out that caused the failure each time. The last time mom had trouble with it was in either the late 80s or early 90s. She called me while the GE technician was there, told me he did not want to fix it and then put him on the phone. I asked what the problem was. Did he not have the part? He had the part but the refrigerator was so old that it did not make sense to fix it and he would give us a certificate for $35 when we bought a new one. I told him to install the part because if we bought a new refrigerator, it would not be a GE, so the only way that they were going to make money on us was by fixing the defrost control. He said that when it went the next time there would be not part to fix it. I told him that if the refrigerator was still in good shape the capillary bulb system could be replaced with an electric defrost timer and thermostat. He said that he would fix it and I thanked him.
