Snaged the WS-2

Thanks for the posts: Rapidry1000 and swestoyz. I called up the guy, and it was still avaliable. So I drove down to San Jose to pick it up. I always have been complaining that the machines were too expensive or too far away, but this time it was neither.

I does run, agitates and spins. Evidently the timer needs work. The spin is noisy and does not brake to a stop. So that needs work too. Possibly a new bearing and break work.

But it runs!! No visible leaks. The guy said that it had been in storage for 15 years, so it may run a while longer.

On the way back, my truck got a flat tire, about a mile from my home. I called AAA and sure enough they were there in 30 minutes. So that added about 45 minutes to my trip.

Did I say it runs? Not in bad shape overall. And it has the Jetcone, cap and filter intact. Even has an extra filter that is missing a small piece.

Yeah! What a great addition to your AMP. It looks to be in very good shape - and hopefully the few issues will just be a tweak or two. I always though these earlier control panels were much more attractive than the later versions. Congrats - there is nothing like watching a Rollermatic/1-18 through the Window Lid!

What a Great find. I love the 1/18's over all others. This one is almost like my Aunts except hers was Poppy and didn't have a window.

Glad you got the washer. Wished you had stopped by in San Francisco on you way home to Sacramento. Would like to have met and to see my Frigidaire Model WC and my Frigidaire 1966 Custom Imperial Washer.

Congratulations on the beautiful 1-18. That is a very handsome control panel and the tub and agitator look in good shape too.

You should probably replace the rail that holds the lint filter in place. I think that is why the other one has a piece missing and is probably also why the filter isn't sitting flush against the subtop. If they aren't held in tight they tend to fall out during spin and then get chewed up by the agitator. You don't want that. Here's a pic and the link.

The brake

This may be wishful thinking, but whenever I store my 1-18, it will not brake normally (just spins and spins) for about the first six washes after I put it back in service.

After a day or two, it resumes normal operation. I just figure it hates being stored.

Maybe you'll get lucky on that one, too

Benign Neglect

I like the idea of a self-healing machine. And I am kind of afraid that I may disturb things like the water and oil bellows, which are not leaking at present. I doubt that they have been replaced.

Rapidry1000, thanks for the invite. Yesterday was way too long, especially with the flat tire, but perhaps another time.

Frontal, the wash-in idea will need to be approved by my domestic partner!! He did come out this morning to ask what was I doing? I replied that I was playing with my machine!

Washing: Mexican detergent some towels, manual fill, drain hose into the garage, for a quick wash.

1040, maybe I started something here with the early AMP and now the early 1-18.

All of my machines are spin drain, the 1-18, filter-flo, and Maytag dependable care. The AMP is a little different since it spins over the top of the outer basket, like a solid tub.

From Saratoga

Yes, this was from Saratoga. The guy was considerate enough to meet me off of 280 on Saratoga Avenue, so I didn't see the Maytag.

The timer motor makes a sound like the mechanism inside is working, however the little black prawl wheel doesn't turn. I tried to replace the motor and prawl with a setup form my WC-6, but it doesn't fit. That set-up is similar to goprog,s machine timer. My WS-2 timer has one black prawl with spring attached to the prawl wheel.

Does anyone have either the timer motor for this machine, or complete timer? It needs to be for standard wash, and soak cycle only. (Those are the two cycles on this machine)

It is funny, I love Automatic Washers, but since I am watching the machine it isn't a problem to advance the timer and run the cycle manually. That way I can add my own spray rinses, etc. This machine seems to allow the cycle knob to turn when the machine is running, is that proper? And I do want to restore the timer function.

But there is a mystery, the machine was set up to run with the lid open! The owner said it was owned by a young guy, perhaps he set it up to view the action!! The timer didn't seem to be set up right to me with the prawl going into the contact wheel on the left, since the wheel turns clockwise, I don't see how it could have worked. Maybe they took it apart and didn't put it together properly.
