Writing letters

Does anyone here still write letters and send in the regular mail? I still write letters and post cards and the odd thing is I usually get an email responce rather than a letter back. I made a point last year to write letters just to see what kind of reaction I would get. I found that it put me in the habit again of letter writing which seems to be a lost form of contact nowadays. As an archivist I wonder how future generations will be able to access our email communications to find out what we were like?

Wow, I wonder what kind of postal regulations would slow down the mail that much?

Letters

We recently moved and I am making it a huge point to teach my second grader how to write letters to her friends and old class.

I purchased a cute item from USPS.com for her and it really has worked. I have 5 letters sitting in the counter waiting for stamps. It's great because the books teaches you the 5 things you need to write a letter, how to address the envelope, etc.

Glad to see

Teaching those skills at a young age is a very good thing indeed. I had a high school student come into the archives last year and he called me over to answer a question about some microfilm he was looking at. The film was an 1820 Last Will and Testament. Hand written of course in script. His question: What language is this? The Kings English I replied. Huh? he said. It's handwriting I said. Oh, we don't do that, we keyboard. What? I said. Yea, we keyboard our homework in Word and email it to the teacher. No Blackboard, we have computers and log onto the school website.

Well, that blew me away. I asked him to write a sentence for me. He printed it. He didn't have any real handwriting skills. I had fun teaching him how to read the 19th century script. The student is now in colledge and comes in from time to time on research projects. He calls me "the early dude" when he has a question.

It's good to see you taking the time to teach this skill.
