Ok. On with the show!
So, the story is...
My local parts supplier put a lady in touch with me who had asked if they knew anyone who liked old washers and dryers. (I must remember to buy them about a ton of doughnuts...). I went to meet her at her parents house. She told me that back in 1974, her mom bought a set of Maytags including a electric dryer in hopes that it would force dad into installing a 220 volt line into their 1950's house so she could stop line drying everything. He, being stubborn, would not. So the washer went into service but the dryer sat in the box in the garage in the hopes that he'd relent having had the money spent. The box being opened only for the dealer to put a power cord on it as a prep prior to delivery. It still was on the wooden pallet.
Not a chance. It sat. Eventually he retired at 70-80 years old. She told him that now that he was retired, he could either hook up the dryer or hang the clothes on the drying lines. He held out to the end and did all the line drying. What almost pushed her over the edge was once he was home full time, he decided the house was too hot and used the last space in the fuse box to connect 220 for a air conditioner..
Anyway, he passed away 9 years ago and then she passed about 3 years ago. The daughter decided to finally turn the house into a rental. So I was able to get the dryer.
The unused 40 year old dryer.
The unused 40 year old dryer still new in the box.
This box...
