So What Is Everyone Cooking/Baking/Doing For Thanksgiving?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I already did a turkey two weekends ago. There were fresh Foster Farms birds at the local Costco, and I also bought a deep fryer, so I decided not to wait for the bacteria to multiply and fried it that day. It came out ok but I think I need to try another one.

Today I haven't yet had the dinner. I'm going to SF to join some old friends, and we'll be having some sort of pork, I'm told. Fine with me. I have another small turkey (previously frozen Safeway brand, 14 lb) that is thawing and I'll fry that up Friday or Saturday.

Then my cousin just invited us over for another "Second Thanskgiving" dinner at his place in SF December 5. I think I will have had my fill of turkey for the year!

Our dinner went off without a hitch this year, Dad was very subdued. We had ham & scalloped potatoes, baked corn casserole, Watergate salad, tuna salad, and cranberry sauce. For dessert it was either custard, Dutch apple, or cherry pie pie w/ an optional scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Post Turkey Day info

I went over to my friend (Tina) moms house again this year. I made roasted garlic mashed potatoes w/sour cream and parmesan cheese to take over.

The highlites: 9 lbs of russet potatoes (they were expecting 22 guests), 3 whole heads of garlic, roasted (could have been 4), 2 cups of sour cream, 1 1/2 cups of grated Parmesan (next time I'll use 2 cups of shredded), about a cup of half & half, 1 1/2 cups chicken broth (warmed) and of course butter and S & P.

YUM!

Here is an AWESOME dish my friend Tina made (it was a BIG hit!) was Roasted Brussels Sprouts w/hazel nuts and gorgonzola cheese. These were....OMG, WOW! She let me borrow the recipe so I GOTTA share! (BTW... obviously I am NOT at any Black Friday sales...since I'm typing this now! LOL)

ROASTED BRUSSELS SPROUTS

Makes 8 servings (4 1/2 cups)
Total time: about 30 minutes

2 lbs brussels sprouts, trimmed & halved
3 Tbsp olive oil
Salt & pepper

For the sauce:
4 Tbsp unsalted butter
2/3 C. hazelnuts, chopped (3 oz)
1/4 C. minced shallots
1 C. heavy cream
2 oz. Gorgonzola cheese, crumbled
2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
Minced zest of 1 lemon

PREHEAT oven to 475 (degrees) with a foil lined baking sheet inside.

TOSS brussels sprouts with oil, S&P in a large bowl. Transfer to hot baking sheet and roast until beginning to brown, about 10 minutes; stir and roast 10 minutes more.

MELT butter in large saute pan over Med heat. Stir in Hazelnuts and shallots until brown flecks appear in the butter, 8 minutes.

STIR in cream; bring to boil, then simmer 2 minutes. Add Gorgonzola and lemon juice. Toss roasted Brussels sprouts to coat, then season with S&P. Garnish with lemon zest and serve.

As predicted...

I spent the day by myself. It was uneventful, apart from a power failure. (Too many turkey roasters plugged in at once? Or from power line breaks caused by melting snow?)

I did take the time to make some onion soup--something I have been meaning to do for some time, but hadn't gotten around to. My Thanksgiving treat, I guess, although it's a soup I will make other times.

Fred and I had a nice quiet Thanksgiving which was fabulous. We made a bacon covered pork roast, home made gravy and stuffing, green bean casserole, cranberry fluff and can-made cranberry sauce.

Good thing we were drinking DIET Coke.

Our day went off without a hitch, everything turned out well. I am yet again glad that I have the extra oven capacity due to the Flair in the summer kitchen. I had the turkey and cabbage rolls cooking downstairs with my dinner rolls proofing on top of the ovens, and all the casseroles in the upstairs oven.According to the guests the Champagne turkey was fab, I will have to share the recipe

I dont have pics of the food served, but I have a pic of the table.

Poppies

I went to a friend's house in Volcano, HI. I had been given a few (3) "lollypots" which are lollypops laced with marijuana. One pop and you're gone for hours.Anyway, my friend's wife,Dorra, made a complete meal for 12 people and had 7 different pies, stuffing,a 35 pound turkey, yams with marshmellows, green beans with cream of mushroom soup and some dried fried onions over them. After we ate, we each had a pop. A few hours later, Dorra made some of the lemon/poppy seed cupcakes that she laced with some of the prescription pot that she and I both get legally from a dispensary for our illnesses. Those bukkers put all three of us away. We woke up around 10AM and were all in a stuper. Dorra got out the left over turkey and made us all sandwiches. We called each other earlier today to see if we were o.k.I got back home late last night only to find out I could have stayed there until this Monday because the store was covered by another employee here. I went ahead and worked it anyway.

Austinado, just FYI, I was diagnosed with testicular cancer back in July and HERE IN HAWAII, the marijuana is legally grown for medicinal use and prescribed to those of us who are terminally ill.I have to go all the way on the other side of the island where there is a dispensary to get it. I didn't want to broadcast my illness because I don't want a pitty party.I'll be lucky to be alive this time next year.It has spread throughout 65% of my body.My oncologist at Queen's Hospital prescribed it to me for the severe pain I have to fight constantly.I can't even ride my bike anymore which was my main source of transportation. So, thanks a lot for your input.I always enjoy the way some people on this site show how much they care about others here. Especially those of us who are suffering. I'm out of here.

For those interested...

I opened up a thread in Dirty Laundry where we can discuss Chuck's posting.

I've been working hard on keeping the controversial and off-topic subjects out of Imperial, Deluxe and Super, but I'm not completely convinced that his posting should be considered controversial enough for deletion.

Any comments regarding this should be taken to the DL thread which I posted a link to. This thread is about Thanksgiving Dinner.

Thanks everyone.

Laundromat,

I am sorry that you are ill. Please don't leave us. There have always been blue-rinsed queens in our appliance world, there will always be blue-rinsed queens.

Just ignore them.

As for you, Todd, it is not up to you or me or anybody else to threaten people and I DEEPLY resent and HIGHLY condemn your unprovoked, inexcusable, totally inappropriate attack on Chuck.

Since Chuck Isn't a Green Star Member

I'd like to point out here in the Super Forum that medicinal use of cannibis has been legal in the state of California for many years. My partner has a prescription for chronic back pain (he's had two surgeries) and sleep issues.

Referring to medicinal use of cannibis as "illegal" by a citizen of the state of California is grossly mischaracterizing a practice that is lawful in both Hawaii and California.

Had someone posted an account of their Thanksgiving where everyone got falling down drunk, which is infinitely more destructive and irresponsible, nobody would have objected.

I'm not saying Chuck didn't provide TMI. I'm just saying.

Robert, please don't delete Chuck's post.

Chuck, I hope you beat the odds, and that in the meantime your medication does what it's supposed to and improves your quality of life.

If I find any further comments necessary they'll be posted on DL.

I appreciate everyone's support here! I have been dealing with this since my diagnoses back in July.My oncologist's suggestion was what made me decide to have him prescribe it. Between the severe pain in my groin and severe migrain headaches that kept me in bed all day, none of the pain realeavers I was prescribed had any effect except making me be all doped up and not able too work. With the THC, the pain subsides enough to allow me to do my daily work and chores.I go to Captain Hook clean all the way on the other side of Hawaii where the dispensary is located and get my monthly supply.I can get it either in bulk buds or already cooked into cookies, brownies, cakes or candies. They also have the THC capsules but, those are way too strong for me. I was doing a trial with them when I worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital and was epileptic. I was their Guiney Pig and any drugs that were on trial at that time were given to patients like me and a daily log was kept to list all of the effects it had,if any. I was paid $250/week for any of the studies I was chosen to participate in.

I have chosen not to go through with the chemo. Those who have known me since high school know how much Hell I have been through as far as my health is concerned.I had epilepsy and would get Psycho motor, petite maul and grande maul sezures daily and had to where knee pads and a helmit to help keep the woundes down to a minimum.I had experimental surgery ( left temperolobectomi) which has kept me sezure free since 1989. Not long after that took place, I went down to 97 pounds and everyone swore I had A.I.D.S. and I lost my job as well as everything I owned because I got fired (set up) from my job. I became homeless and lived under a bridge for 5 months.I had to leave Baltimore because the reputation I got from looking like an escapee from a Nazi war camp kept anyone from hiring me. In fact, one of my so called friends who owned a teddy bear store in Fells Point was going around to every place there I had applied for work and told them I had A.I.D.S. I had 2 witnesses and took her to court winning the case and keeping her from ruining my reputation any more.I swore to myself I would never be homeless again and, if need be, end my life if that ever happened again.
Now that I am diagnosed with terminal cancer, I will not go any further. Somebody "up there" doesn't want me to live because I keep getting these horrific diseases that are either severe or incurable. So, I am just living each day,one at a time and am ready to go whenever. I may be moving to Hilo because the "drama" here at Scoshi's is way too much on my plate. They steal my tools, my food, my supplies and, sometimes try to get weed from my medicine cabinet. The 6 guys who also, live here on campus drink beer and smoke weed 24/7 sun up to sundown.Pete, who is the "ring master" here, just sold the business and the new owner not only did not pay what he owed but also took $35,000 of OUR money and went to Europe. That money was to pay for our gas, electric, cable, propane and water. All of which were turned off. Without the propane to sell here,we're out of business.I had to take money out of my laundromat profit and apply it toward buying gas to fill our 1200 gallon tank. That was almost $3400!!!!!Once my SSI kicks in(I filed in July and it will be retroactive)I'm out of here. I found a nice 1 bedroom apartment in Downtown Hilo right smack dab next to Rainbow Falls with a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean and Rainbow falls.$650/month + utilities. My SSI will cover the rent and I will receive $385/month for groceries. The SSI is the max anyone can get and, because I have worked steadily since I was 15 years old,my Social Security really has paid off. It's a shame I can't stay around to take advantage of it and go traveling.

Hey Chuck....

Have you tried contacting Dr. Lawrence Einhorn at Indiana University [email protected] . He is the granddaddy of testicular cancer treatments. He responds to EVERYONE!!!! and has saved the life of many men who are in advanced stages of tc. Dr E is the doctor who is responsible for flip-flopping the survival stats for TC.

Chuck, What cell type do you have? Is it Seminoma or non-Seminoma (Chorio, Embryonal Carcinoma, Mature Teratoma...etc)?

My prayers are with you and if you want somone to chat with then feel free to send me an email. Having gone thru testicular cancer I might be able to help. Sounds like you may be depressed (very understandable) and this may be clouding your decision to survive :-) Either way...I'm hear to listen to you and support whatever you decide!

I found great support and resources at the TC-Forum at tc-cancer.com . Very active group!!

My best thoughts to you!

Rich

Thanks so much, Rich! I will look into that.My cell type is non Seminoma. The right one is twice the size of the left one but both are continuing to shrink and the right one has a lot of the tissues growing on it which are sists
