Not sure if it's a regional thing or what, but I've noticed that fewer and fewer gay people have rainbow flags, pink triangles, or HRC stickers on their cars these days. Back in my single days I found those stickers incredibly helpful at identifying who was checking me out in traffic and who was just staring for no apparent reason. Ah, the good old days!

The rabbit in the back of the house I can deal with...

I received a panicked telephone call (while a few states over, away on vacaton) that there is a racoon and her "pups" in the pine tree in front of my house.

The ex has declined to call an animal-control specialist. The priviledge has been granted to me. *LOL*

Togs, I was starting to wonder where you've been! You'll definitely want to take care of the raccoon situation.

As the street in front of my house is torn out, I've been exiting the house via the back yard, crossing through my neighbors back yards to get to my car, which is a block away. This morning I found a 'gift' from one of the neighborhood cats: A very abused squirrel carcass. Once it gets dark, I'm going to toss is over my fence into my neighbor's weed patch where it can finish decomosing in peace.

My GOD the animal kingdom is gruesome.

On another note: I have no cold water! I washed a load of light colors in the FL'er and was shocked when I reached in to pull them out. They were quite warm. I looked at the control, which was set at warm/cold. It finally dawned on me: The block-long garden hose feeding water to my house from a still-unspecified source had been lying out in the sun all day. Hence, no cold water. Very weird for Minnesota, where our water stays pretty cold, even during the summer months.

Brokeback Neighbors

First, let me just write that I can't believe I'm passing along advice... as someone who has been closeted and uptight about being gay most of my life...

Ralph, where in the Bay Area do you reside? From what my friends are telling me, many guys in their late 30's and older have been fleeing SF and heading to the burbs. I'm sure you've noticed that there seem to be a number of members located right here in the Bay Area.

Zipdang... I went to school in Salem and have many friends and fraternity bros in Portland who are family. In what part of Portland do you reside? Also, I believe there are several other members who live in and around Portland.

Hey Mike! Salem, huh? I have an aunt and uncle who live there. This world keeps getting smaller. I live on Mt. Scott in southeast Portland, just one block from the Multnomah-Clackamas county line. (We love our house but wish we would've bought on the Clackamas County side of the hill because of the property tax advantages.) We're far enough into suburbia that we didn't expect to encounter many other gays in the area, but we've been quite surprised by how many of us are out here. It must be because of the innuendo in saying "mount Scott."

David and Mike, thanks for your input. Interestingly, the one guy who stares at me every time I drive by him happens to walk his dog quite often. Maybe he knows that dogs can do their part to facilitate a connection and he's workin' it. I can tell you that our sweet little black & white cat is a miserable failure at attracting anyone even if she's sprawled on her back with paws in the air waiting for somebody, anybody, to provide her with an attention fix.

Mike, I'm at the south end in 95124, bordering 95030. The "family" zip code in town is 95126. My mom's place is there. We see guy couples walking (with dogs sometimes) past her place on a regular basis. We've debated over and over about buying out my sister when the time comes to sell my mom's house. It's in an older and super desirable CEO laden 'hood close to downtown and much more intellectual than the suburban 'hood we currently call home with a distressing number of redneck monster trucks roaring their way through. Alas, my mom's place is 80+ years old and would be a money pit and we'd have no backyard privacy like we enjoy now, so we are thinking we are better off staying put. So what part of the Bay Area are you in Mike?

Latest news in my front & back yard is that West Nile has arrived within less than a mile from us. I've found I don't get bit much since taking a garlic pill every day. Wouldn't you know I just ran out. Time to re-stock.

My observations have shown that....

Most Lesbians prefer suburban living to urban living. I am not saying ALL, but you sure do see more lesbians in the food stores out in the suburbs than you see gay men.

Lesbians can be quite volatile when it comes to men! I find that they are best left alone. I think that's the way they want things anyway.

Recently on television, the Harris County Texas Mosquito Control department stated that they use ice to attract mosquitoes for testing for illnesses. The other night we had a mosquito or two buzzing around our bedroom and we couldn't find it. We put out a bowl of ice (maybe 6 or 7 cubes) and went to bed. No more buzzing. In the morning we found three dead mosquitoes in the bowl! It does work!

I personally see more lesbians downtown than anywhere else.

But maybe that's somehow related to the fact that the building I work in is bordered on one side by a feminist book store, and on the other by Fire Department #1.

Oh yeah, and our fire chief is a lesbian.

Allen, I couldn't agree more about lesbians being a volatile group. But I'd limit that to the "I wish I was a man even though I hate men" variety. The well-adusted lesbians who are feminine in every respect and totally blend in are no problem whatsoever.

I've never understood why the butch lesbians always seem ready to pick a fight. But I'm hardly intrigued by them enough to want to research this type of behavior. I simply steer clear of them and keep well hidden the fact that the repulsion is quite mutual.

This really isn't fair

I'm really not all that comfortable with a few of the statements made in a few posts above, they are stereotypical nonsense that I don't think belongs here, not to mention really unfair to a whole group of people. I don't think I have ever once been made to feel uncomfortable or threatened by a female member of our community. At least nothing that stands out in my memory. Now how is writing something like that any different than what I had to ban "BT what's his face" for a few weeks ago? I really am stunned that I am reading this crap, its one thing to make a silly joke, but this is no joke.

With all do respect, I happen to know many lesbians who are indeed quite comfortable with men. Two of my close friends here in Florida are a lesbian couple of 11 years who couldn't be more feminine and actually prefer the company of other gay men as opposed to women. To say that lesbians in general are "volatile", is indeed offensive and incorrect. I will give you the benefit of the doubt however and allow you to respond.
Granted, some lesbians have a chip on their shoulder,but so do some gay men...some heterosexual men or women too. People differ in all categories.
I really think it is crucial for the Gay & lesbian community to support each other and help build each other up,not tear each other down. We have so many people ( ex:Bush/Cheney) in this country that want to keep us silent and deny us our basic human rights.

I am sorry if my post offended you, but I was just relating my own personal observations. Remember, I did not say ALL off them. I am positive that there are some nice ones out there, but the ill mannered ones stand out more.
And this would be true of any kind of groups of people regardless of their sexual orientation, religion, regional location, etc.
If it would make you happier, I promise never to discuss lesbians again on this website.

Being a straight guy, I've aways gotten along with lesbians very well for some reason. There's a girl that works at the service counter of the local Ford dealer. When I take my company trucks up there for routine service, I'm always chatting it up with her about cars and stuff. She just acts like "one of the guys" sort of. I also remember a lesbian girl that was running with my father's rescue squad. We got along real well together for the longest time.

...maybe it's because my skinny physique, or my long hair! Dunno, but I've just found quite the opposite true over here on the east coast!

Steven, you're just experiencing the inverse of what gay men do. Straight women tend to get along famously with gay men, gay women tend to get along better with straight men. I always thought this was a case of straight women not feeling threatened by gay men but can't explain the reverse situation.
