Here I was thinking~

that this was about people who have more than 4 separate brands of laundry detergent, three separate dish detergents, and five or so bath products.

Yes,

they come and go. It is a fad right now among the Ökofundies (ecological fundamentalist green alternative types) and I got some from friends who are of that persuasion last year.
Certainly they do provide a level of tenside and yes, within very narrowly defined limits they work.
Sort of.
Given the very long wash cycles available to us here in Europe and the 195°F or hotter water we can use, I could see them being ok for light duty cleaning.

Just, for light cleaning duty I would tend to use a modern enzyme based detergent and 40° water in a 'fast' cycle of about 45 minutes. Be easier on the environment from my perspective. And, to be honest, even a very mild sodium laurel sulfate based shampoo washes rings around them. I know, cause I tried.

Of greater concern to me is the toxic effect of saponins. In a household with young children, you know better than to leave commercial cleaning agents lying within reach. But nuts?
