Softener.

Top loders are not common here in the uk, so I have to make do with 2 very old hotpoints, or watch them on you tube. The question is I notice that the softenher is added to the top of the agitator in a littel cup in a lot of the machines and this seems to get spun out with the wash water. Is this supposed to happen?
On my hot points you can select add softener where by the washer stops at the last rice so you can add softener to the last rince water resulting in nice soft socks.

I don't know about the Hotpoint,  But the TL machines I have had with a softener dispenser on the agitator you put the softener in the cup at the start of the cycle.  On the first spin the softener is spun to an outer bowl of the dispenser and when the tub stops spinning it then drops by gravity into the center of the tub/agitator to be mixed with the rinse water.

Here in the U.S. since most top loaders have only 1 wash and 1 rinse cycle, when you add the softener to the cup on the top of the agitator, it's spun out and held in the agitator cup by force during the spin cycle. Then when the tub and agitator stop spinning for the rinse cycle, the softener then drains into the tub. Although the machine mounted dispensers which add and dilute the softener automatically as well, the automatic agitator mounted design is a less expensive feature, yet just as effective. The only problem with the agitator mounted dispensers is, if you wish to run your clothes through a second rinse, you either need to add the softener by hand during the second rinse, or during the fill of the first rinse if you want the softener in the very last rinse cycle. As where with the machine mounted dispensers, it will add the softener to the very last rinse automatically from the start.

If I had a top loading agitator washer, I'd either have a model with the electronic dispenser or a Downy Ball. the consumers who get the agitator connected ones don't read the instruction manual on how to maintain them so, they leave a messy, ugly, gummy residue on the clothes.the softener will gum up from not diluting it and make a real mess on the agitator and in between the inner and outer tubs.

Hotpoint

On my hotpoints you have a selection button whitch you press if you want to add softener. It basicaly pauses the machine and waits for you to add softener, you then press the button and away it goes to the end of the cycle.

In the frunt loader you have a seperate slot in the soap draw and the softener is added at the right time automatyicaly.

Theas get disgusting in a very short time and before long things start growing in there. I dont understand why people don't clean theas.

One of the best tips I herd and now do my self is every time i make a cup of tea what ever is left in the kettel I pour into the soap draw, keeping it spotless, ( also worrid about when nephew comes to visit and may get hold of the ht ketal.)
