solid tub SQ?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

They were all over the Cape in the 60"s

You Betcha'
There is still a Laundromat in Buzzard's Bay the "SpeedWash".

They had 2 Banks (I think it was 12 in each bank) of SQs. I remember they had the earlier ones with the Emblem on the Front Panel and the "High Vane" Agitators. When you started the machine (25 cents) there was this "Throaty" sound from the pump. Loud Banging Solenoids, loved it. Then they were replaced slowly like the one in the link around late 60's.

My Guess is the one in the link has got to be 35-40 years old. Maybe I'm wrong, but in any case it's old.

They also had 18 Philco Bendix "Double Loaders". They were 35 cents each. And in the back of the Laundromat they had 3 "Big Boys". OMG... they were 4 whole Quarters, a Whole Dollar. WOW were they loud. The solenoids would energize and the Clang was almost Ear Deafing. They also had Huebsch and Hoyt Dryers (1o cents for 10 minutes) with the "Loadtrol" lever on the front.

The Place is still in operation but I haven't been there for years.

There was also a Laundromat in Sandwich that had Highlanders in the Early 60s and then replaced them which were Helicals.

Sundays or Mondays were my Favorite Days of the week because Mom and I used to do wash. And of Course, I got to pick out the Machines !!!

too high for me

even though it's in cincinnati. i recently picked up a speed queen solid tub (non commercial) washer in indianapolis that was being given away (although i did give him $100.00 for it).

Just Curious

How do you tell it's a solid tub? We had a local laundromat that had a very similar machine, but it was a perf tub, presumably Marathon machine based?

I think you mean the eighties...............................

That panel first started to appear in laundromats, and laundry rooms across America in the early 1980s. Some models had an agitator with a bell shape on top that said do not load above this line.

SQ Control Panel

There were some pics of an old laundromat floating about last year or so with some multi-colored queens (errmmmm!). The machines I had seen with this control panel were from a laundry that is still in business. When I moved to Lexington in 2001 they were still in use, I guessed them at early 80's.

That's the Laundry

Yup, sure is. Thanks for finding it. The one for sale has a different top it appears than the older commercials (hinges, etc.).

I don't know...

What the facination is ...

About all the Washers and Dryers in a row ??? To me it's sort of a "Power, Strength, and Satifaction " Thing. But most of us now have that in our Own Spaces.

For example, I have 2 KitchenAids running. The 806, and a HOH Dryer. It's almost better than having a boyfriend LOL, They all don't talk back, let alone when they break down, there is nothing to do but fix it. LOL

Unbalanced Light

The unbalanced load light in the center of the console is tell-tale that this is a perf-tub marathon machine.

Ed's got jokes

Ed your funny......what ever do you mean about having machines in a row?....maybe a bold statement?.....maybe I should mention this to my therapist....lol

Actually when my partner seen this photo on this site, he commented what idiot would have machines all alike lined up, I am suprised you don't have something like this set up......I told him to look closer-----it's OUR basement!....hahaha

sooo...If it has those visible lid hinges and the console has no out of balance light, looks old as dirt, it MIGHT be a solid tub SQ?

Martin,
Your Neptunes look good like they are! I'd be more p#ssed about the dent in the door of the first Neptune washer.

EXCELLENT OBSERVATION MALCOLM, by the way how is the weather down your way? We are about to get walloped again in Connecticut.
Mike

Dent can't be helped...it came that way....the outter washer and dryer I got as a set off CL for 100.00, washer needed bearings, dryer OK....the inner set I got for my partner as a housewarming gift for his last house he bought.....I did bearing jobs on both......really no issues on any of them, the original set had a motor board fail on the washer, and mother board on the dryer replaced under warranty......I did the bearing jobs and replaced the gas valve solenoids on one dryer.....

great daily drivers....with 6 kids and 2 adults, plus 6 dogs.....I have laundry!!!!!!theres also a Frigidaire FL set in the upstairs bathroom.....

I have 2 SQ home machines....but I would kill to have 4 to 6 SQ set up like in the laundromat....all going at the same time.......that would bring back memories.....
