I have had it with trying to tell antique dealers about what and why I collect washers.they could have an old washer that's been outside since the Johnson administration and want 350.00 for it! or I show them a pic of one that I am specifically looking for and also give them an example too keep. then they proceed to buy every old washer they find working or not and expect me to buy all of them. even though none of them are the one Im looking for. I find as a rule antique dealers only think that these machines are used as planters and other sacrilege. when I tell them I want to use these machines I usually get looks like I have a tale. I have come to then estimation that we appliance collectors are a different breed all together. I am so thankful that I have all of you that understand me. tell me what you think. thanks Bill

You ought to see what the antique places think if you collect vacuum cleaners--They lead you to a modern dusty,dirty, Bissel "plastivac" and expect you to pay top dollar for it.You can find such machines for FREE on the curb or in a vac shop dumpster.Learned a lesson DON'T hunt for appliances,vacuums,radios,and such at antique places-they will try to rob you blind with their high prices---and to top it off the thing doesn't work and is in poor condition.Go to swap shops and thrift places instead.

vaccume collection

You will get your collection but stay focussed…Im about three years in collecting …Adverage out your machines and they cost less..I have paid 250 dollars for one.. But the collection is about 35 dollars per vacuum when you adverage..I do the same with washers and dryers and any collectable…ADVERAGE THE PRICES…my washer collection is 300 per machine and I hope to bring that down by some free ones.. And i include the trips to pick them up and shipping...

Are not where I expect to find cool washers and Dryers, look else where, this site is one of the best places to start.

Back when I was 18, I went into an antique store. It was one I hadn't been into. Upon walking in, I could tell it wasn't like the ones I normally go into. This one was more glass and china. As I was browsing, a woman who worked/owned there, came up to me and asked if there was anything I was looking for. Since I collected antique radios at the time, I asked if she had any. She got all offended and was extremely rude and replied "What do you think we are, a second hand store?" After I walked out, I thought, I should have responded "Yes, technically you are."

Justin, That store sounds like this place in Savannah, GA called Rose Fromberg Antiques. Mom dragged us in there while we were walking around. My brother and I were elementary school age. We walked into this store that was practically transparent because almost everything in it was glass or crystal on glass shelves. My brother and I could feel the owner's eyes on us just waiting for an arm to lift from our sides. Time slowed to a crawl as mom looked at stuff, but even she did not pick up anything. Mercifully we did not spend much time there.

I much prefer second hand stores to "Antique Shoppes."

Second-hand stores and thrift stores are my favourite places to hunt for vintage appliances, large and small.   Although the supply is declining, a vintage washer, dryer or dishwasher in a second-hand store may actually be priced lower than more 'modern' ones!   

 

On the other hand, the 'blessing' of eBay has led some thrift stores to price their vintage appliances according to what they see listed but that topic has already been discussed in depth....
