Some recent acquisitions

Haven't wasted much bandwidth lately with pictures of my crap, so I guess I'm due!
First up: Electronics

Here are two tape recorders that I recently acquired. Both of these were prominently featured in (it seems) practically every Ward's Christmas catalog I saw growing up.
So now, as an "adult", I decided they are "must haves."

The RTR is marked "Signature Jr.", but they're both actually Mayfair models. I got the cassette player MIS (mint in styrofoam, not box) with instructions, etc. Haven't tried it yet: I'll have to find a cassette first! The RTR definitely needs some work. I'll get to it eventually.

This little beauty is a Westinghouse Message Center from about 1965ish (I forget exactly.) Wanted one ever since I saw it in an old Spiegel Christmas catalog. Consumer Reports did a "Once Over" on it, calling it "A $40.00 substitute for a note pad."
It's basically an endless-loop tape recorder. Like the Signature tape recorder, it needs some work. But it's not like I'm actually planning on using it; just want it to look cool hanging on my kitchen wall.

Here is the THIRD Lady Vanity blender I've gotten. The first two leaked, but this one was absolutely MIB--an unopened wedding gift. That item in the jar is an ad for a cookbook.
I haven't practiced any Blender Wizardry yet, but I've been busy.

Pie, anyone?

Here we have a lovely Presto Control Master Oven. I plan on using this on the balcony during the summer months so I don't heat up the kitchen. Like the other Control Master appliances, when the heat control is removed it's completely immersible.

Lady Vanity redux

For those days when you need to refresh your 'do in a hurry--because HE is picking you up at eight--just plug in your Lady Vanity hot rollers and in minutes, you'll put the finishing touches on your shimmering hairdo.
(I stole that last part from a GE hair dryer commercial.)
This is another mint find. And when you're done, it closes into a handy pocketbook-size case.

I've got a secret!

This is more than just a lovely Danish Modern desk. Under that calendar lies a Singer Fashion Mate! I *love* this desk--it has tons of room in the drawers. It's really too big for where I have it, but I don't care.

And finally

A Bigass Swoopy thing.

What is this? An ashtray? Candy dish? Fruit bowl? In the picture it looks kind of like a Chip 'n Dip thing, but the "dip" part is actually open like the swoop on the left. It's a good 18" across. It's dated 1968, but that's all I know about it.
Well, that and the fact that it'll look swell on top of my TV.

Oh, the blender's a piece of crap, for sure. Which is probably why it remained unopened all these years!

Still, I like the style, which is why I got it.

Now that's neat stuff I like. Course you know I have an affinity for small kitchen appliances and tape recorders as well. The cassette model you have I've seen before under a few different names but I think it's a Sanyo in disguise. So what if the blender is a cheap one, it's still collectible, that same model was sold in Canada under the Samson-Dominion lineup, it's in my Consumer Reports catalog with daisies around the base LOL. I haven't see the Presto oven before, I guess you need it now you sold your GE Toast'R Oven. It looks too nice to dirty up with greasy stuff or is it just for baking? The dish I know nothing about but the design is nice, very 60's ish. Does it have a makers mark? I certainly don't remember the Westy Message machine or I'd have wanted one!!

The Toast-R-Oven

Pete, I only sold one of my Toast-R-Ovens. I got another one--the first model with the popup door, I think--at the Sally Ann for 5 bucks!

The top elements stopped working, but I can work around it. I opened 'er up to see if I could fix but couldn't find anything wrong. Will have to tear into it again when I have more time.

I never heard about the Presto oven until I got the recipe book for my Presto Cook 'N Serv frying pan. There are recipes for the whole Presto lineup in there. Like many other things, I saw the oven, had to have it.

The Signature Jr. reel to reel was what my sister got as a Christmas present circa 1966. I was always begging her to let me play with it (I was only 5/6 so she was rightfully reluctant, although I hated not being able to play with it). She even had the original box for it with sparkly stars around the tape unit floating in space.

She eventually gave it to me, but it started recording really muddy. My dad took it to "Wards" for repair, whoever they used did a lousy job, as it came back and just sounded terrible but in a different way. So I gave up on it.

If I remember correctly, there is a reverse but no fast forward. A handle pops out of the side. And one of the dials, I think the "tone" one, doesn't really do anything at all!

Man we had hours of fun with that recorder.

With all of the goodies that you have found we can tape record our voices on the Mayfairs, leave ourselves prank phone calls and then listen to them on our new answering machine, make some F U N blender drinks, bake us some apple pies, put our hair up in rollers, run us up a frock to wear on Saturday night, pop us some popcorn and use our new moderne popcorn dish, and TALK ABOUT MENS!!! Happy for you, Veg,

but the only thing that interests me is the Presto Control Master Oven. It is roughly the same vintage as my Control Master Pressure Cooker.

You didn't take my offer on the Radarange....

Veg, The Presto oven is nice. Congratulations! I was with a family friend in the early 60s when she picked up one at either the Top Value or S&H Green Stamp Redemption Center (sounds vaguely religious). I found a mint one too, but it was among the things that I rented to Barry Levinson's Company when they made Avalon and it came back with part of the plastic trim broken. The evenizer over the heating element is very important if you are baking anything with exposed food. Pie crust will char around the edge without it. Believe me, when electricity rates soar this summer, your willingness to use this outside will more than pay for itself.

Presto made something else that was pretty neat that might be mentioned in the instructions for one of your Control Master Appliances. It was a timer in the cord for the heat probe. It was spring wound and I believe it can be set for up to an hour and then it will turn off which ever appliance you are using.
