Been instant-messaging with lavamat_jon (and why did it take so long for me to discover THAT??) and learned a couple of things.
F'rinstance, since Europe tends to have hard water, some washers have built-in water softeners.
Some washers (maybe dryers too, can't remember) have anti-tangle sensors. If the machine senses that your sheets, for example, are getting balled up, it'll reverse tumble to untangle them.
His AEG washer has a 1600 RPM spin! Geez, after that, you'd hardly need a dryer at all.
My personal favorite: there's an appliance company (Italian, I think) called SMEG. Ewwwww. Think that beats BJ's for Most Embarrassing Name!
If all this is old knowledge to you, just ignore me. In fact, it's probably a good policy to ignore me anyway ;-)

Hmmm. I know some Euro dryers do reverse tumble, but on a period scheduled basis throughout the cycle . . not specifically in response to a sensor to detect tangling/balling. How could that be done?

My Fisher & Paykel SmartLoad dryer does reverse tumble for 40 seconds every 4 minutes.

Yep, you're right. It's dishwashers that have the softeners. I verified this by going back to the Miele site.
Man, their washers must be something else: some of 'em spin up to 1800 RPM. They have Oversudsing Sensors. *Halogen* tub lights, no less.
And a Starch Cycle! I didn't realize anyone still starches stuff.

I love starching

That's a most useful dispenser in my AEG! My tablecloths and linens get starch as do my work shirts, they press up so nicely and crisp. I use the liquid starch and let my Lavamat do the rest!
