What do you do when you have articles of clothing that don't really fit neatly into the "lights" or "darks" pile? I'm not referring to mostly white articles with a little bit of color or vice versa. I'm thinking of, for example, a checked shirt with equal parts white and red and / or blue that has not bled into the white parts? Would it go into lights or darks?

Maybe some here might say to use those Shout Color Catchers, but I'm an old fuddy-duddy in that I'd rather sort.

I apologize; none of the "tag" categories really apply to my post, so since I happened to mention Shout Color Catchers in passing, I decided to use the "detergents and additives" tag.

My husband has a few polo shirts that are white, but with colored stripes, and a few button ups with checkers or stripes that are primarily white. I used to just wash them on their own, but with only having like four or five, it took forever to accumulate them, and I didn't want them in with white shirts and underwear and socks with hot water. So, I started putting them in with the bright colors, since I still only use cold/cool water, and I haven't had a bit of fading or bleeding whatsoever.

My load piles are usually: towels, whites, bright colors, darks (anything black or near black, such as dark navy or burgundy), and then heavy fabrics like jeans, sweatshirts, hoodies, bathrobes. And then sheets on their own of course.
