I traveled to South America a good bit in the late 90s and the cars were very interesting...older designs that were generally confined to the markets where the assembly plants were (there were Peugeot 504s in Argentina built new until the mid 90s). Things have changed a bit, with plants in the region less "stand-alone" and more integrated into the worldwide manufacturing footprints of the auto manufacturers.

Fun fact: the Chevrolet Cruze is still being manufactured in Argentina for the South American market--it's a relatively luxurious car from the "mass market" standpoint, even as it's been discontinued throughout North America and Asia. It still is on the Opel-engineered global platform (rather than the emerging market China-engineered GEM platform which most of the other vehicles in South America use).

GM has two types of plants down in South America--full-function plants (Brazil/Argentina) which build from rolls of steel (they do stamping) and assembly plants (Colombia/Ecuador) which build from CKD (completely knocked down) kits.

The IKA Torino built from 1966 to 1981 had the body style of a 1964 / 1965 Rambler American, on the longer wheelbase of the Rambler Classic, and was powered by the Willys Jeep OHC "Tornado" inline six through the early 1970s.

 

The 1962 / 1963 Ford Falcon body style was built in Argentina through 1991
