noticed my cerwin vega speakers(1987,8"woofers)were starting to knock and rattle-pulled the grille and sure enough, foam rotted...my 1993 advent legacy 2 have been stashed away for years awaiting foam repair and I notided the foam is starting to get a little tender on my 1979 ETR model 410s...Looks like some speakers will be in the shop for repair soon. The advents and the ETR 410s are both 10"woofers-i have 2 sets of "Parts Express"10" repair kits on hand-anyone here refoam with one of these kits?

I've always taken my speakers in to a shop for service. Luckily here in the Minneapolis area we have Market Speaker that has been around for ages and do good work. Generally they have used OEM parts too, although most every speaker I have had serviced was a JBL.

If you are patient and detail orientated I think one of the kits would serve you just fine. I know of a few friends that have used them with good results.

I did this about a year ago on an old pair of JVC speakers I own. It wasn't as difficult as you might think it would be. Here's a link to the thread.

I walked into a speaker shop here in Burbank and told them what I wanted to do. They sold me the kit and explained the best way to proceed. You may be able to find a similar outfit in your area.

I re-foamed the woofers on a set of early 70's Advent Loudspeakers a few years ago. I ordered a kit from eBay. The replacement foam in the kit was a polyether/rubber foam composite. Nice stuff.

The time consuming part is the removal of the original foam and adhesive from the cone.

The speakers sounded AMAZING afterwards. I want to eventually change out the electrolytics in the cross-overs, but for now, I'm quite satisfied. If you're patient and take it easy during the cleaning process, it's worth the couple of hours to do the job yourself. I think I had about 3 hours total between the two woofers.

That is thte same company I ordered my refoam kit from. Had very good experience with Simply Speakers and definitely would recommend them. Kit was sent out promptly, detailed directions and a better than original foam. I ordered mine by phone and their customer service was very helpful. Their website has tons of different kits they stock.
