I have now owned three FL washers which utilize/utilized separate pump motors for their drain functions. Those were/are two Frigidaires and my current machine, an HE3.

In all three cases, when the drain pump motors are energized, they all sound like a thrashing machine, and give normally quiet machines an annoyingly loud whirr whirr whirr, especially when the water has all been pumped out. I realize that this usualy creates a sucking sound, but the noise here is with the pump motor assembly itself.

I have a tough time believing that my experience is unusual, or that manufacturers couldn't do better. It is obvious that the drain motor is poorly balanced and probably the cheapest thing they could find. Hardly a 4-pole, synchronous motor.

Noisy pumps

The current FL's, including my Duet HT, uses a pump powered by a cheap shaded-pole motor with an odd-looking 2-lobe rotor enclosed in a plastic housing, rather than the traditional round "squirrel-cage" rotor. I doubt that there is anything which can be done about the noise. You're right-it's strange that the manufacturer would engineer a very quiet washer and then put in a very noisy pump...

Hi

Its the same in the Uk with front loaders. The main drive motor may be quiet but the manufacturers tend to put in cheap noisy pumps.

i agree.....

i have got a hotpoint aqualtis, which is silent in washing, hums when spinning... but the bloody pump, which is separate from the main motor is so noisy, it ruins the whole machine...

I have a rather new Samsung frontloader and i have exactly the same problem, the pump is incredibly noisy and this is the second pump on it (the machine itself isnt even a year old yet lol) im thinking of getting an Aqaultis as the Samsung has been out of action for nearly 3 months now.

Chris- Anymore info on yours would be greatly appriciated :):)
