You Need This, Hans!

Now that you have a range hood to exhaust smellies and greasies, you need to step up to the ultimate in easy range care -

A Broan/NuTone stainless backsplash to cover the wall area between the rangetop and the lower edge of the range hood. I have had these in the past, and they are ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL, because they wipe clean and protect the wall from heat and grease. Lowe's carries them, though they may have to order the 42" size.

They're not expensive (under $100 in stainless for the 42-incher) and they go up with only four screws.

By the way, you have found what I consider to be the perfect combination - a White range and a stainless hood. White is great for the range because it's easy-care and always matches other White appliances. But it's not so great for range hoods, because they get cleaned so much with strong cleaning solutions to cut grease, which degrades their paint. A stainless hood solves the problem.

I cannot have a vent hood where I am now (there's a closet where the ducting needs to go, which would be a code violation), but the day I can have one again, I'm going back to a vent hood with a backsplash.

Just in case you don't have a retailer who can get one of these for you, it's also possible to have any sheet-metal shop make one. It's just a flat sheet of stainless 42 inches by 24 inches, with a screw hole in each of the four corners. Just make sure they finish the edges so that they're not sharp. I bought a Vent-a-Hood from Great Indoors several years ago which I'd assumed would have the outside in white but the innards in stainless (the sample was a stainless hood/stainless innards)...it's all white, though...innards and all! It's made impeccably----the use/care guide says dishwasher safe. I actually emailed them to clarify and was told that it's guaranteed to be dishwasher safe...it doesn't seem to bother it. I don't know what I did without the nice hood...it spanks a micro-hood!

Are you talking about putting the filter for the vent hood in the dishwasher?

It sounds like you're saying you're putting the whole vent hood in the dishwasher. If that's the case, I want to see what kind of dishwasher you have! ;)
 
UPDATE:

I had a PM from Hans that tells me he just might do the backsplash!

If he does, this is going to be one IMPOSING installation - forty-two inches of stainless range hood and backsplash setting off that beautiful Norge.

He should be able to cook for the Third Army with that setup - and clean up afterwards with ease.

Might be a good idea to call before making the trip - stores don't typically carry all the sizes and finishes. You may find they'll need to order it for you.

If they do, you should ask if there's a delivery charge to the store - this is a game stores have begun playing to boost revenues.

that Norge is one beauty indeed, the gorgeous NuTone hood is just gilding the lily!

I think the '55/56 ranges across the board were the zenith of US range quality when balanced with new features, only lacking in self-cleaning... even our '58 is definitely not nearly as well built as the ranges from just a couple years before, though it is far more flashy.

We also grew up with a round NuTone on the wall under a no-fan hood, those things were the in-wall ventilating equivalent of a "hurricane in a box", they could about suck your eyeballs out! even steak-on-fire in the broiler was no challenge for those mighty mighty NuTones. Typically thay had a chain that released the outside door and turned on the fan simultaneously. Believe it or not, our current 1955 Rancher had one in the bathtub as bathroom ventilation - can you imagine stepping into a hot bath and reaching for that chain to turn on the exhaust fan?? I can't imagine how that got by an inspection, and then stayed there for another 50 years?!! Took that out the day we moved in! We also have a NuTone in the knotty -pine kitchen of the house we own that son presently lives in, also circa 1955. All the houses built around here at about that time period seem to have them.

I also grew up in a house with the unvented hood/NuTone wall fan arrangement, and I wholeheartedly concur with your opinion of it.

In addition, it was easier to clean than modern vent hoods; the innards of the wall fan were removable.

The major drawback was that a wall fan can let cold air in more readily than a vent hood. [this post was last edited: 2/28/2013-15:25]
 
NuTones and cold air...

yes that indubitably was a problem, they do leak air; those outer doors didn't seal all that well, and one would think that they'd never heard of insulation back then. I saved the one that I took out of the bathroom for spares, but the one remaining in the wall will still just about pull the hair clean out of your scalp!
