Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Eddy thats quite a beautiful acquisition, what a score.  I’m sure you’ll have lots of fun getting it up and running.  And how fortunate to also have the original owners manual.  It looks like new.  Congratulations!

Eddie

Wow, congrats Eddy! That has to be the find of the year! Great cosmetic shape and hopefully not too much heartache to get running again.

Oh No no no no

It's got a rust chip in the tub - Send it back !!!! DEFECTIVE for sure !!!

No, really incredible find but what struck me was to see you post Eddy its been too long!

That is a beautiful find , wow! I'm headed out to the Cousins as soon as this pandemic is over so lets WASH !!!

Can't wait to see the restore, looks like a few broken wires and hoses, hopefully it's that simple for operation.

With all those vanes it looks like GE Piece by Piece washing action in there !!

Congratulations!

The Speed Queen Combination

Wow Eddy what a great save.

SQ was the last US company to introduce a Combination Washer-Dryer, it came out in 1961.

It was the smallest CWD measuring just 25 1/2" wide, it was billed as the compact Combo.

Its maximum wash-dry capacity is around 5-6 pounds of clothing, similar to most 24" combinations built around the world.

This and the Bendix combinations were the fastest spinning US combinations, around 550 RPMs.

Interestingly this SQ is just a smaller version of the very short lived 1957 Hotpoint combination.

Hi Eddy, you are making our collection of combos less rare, we thought we had the only one, His Majesty Jon C. found the one we have at the Museum, I did hear that there may still be one at SQs factory in Ripon Wisconsin.

Eddy It was great talking to you about your new find the other evening, keep us updated on your progress on installing new bearings and seals.

Other Interesting Things about The SQ-CWD

These were only produced in white although the original engineering article about this machine said the door and control panel trim could be had in Coral [ pink ] Green or Yellow, but everyone I have seen [ 4 ] all have the Coral trim.

These were only made in water condensing electric drying models, about 4000 watts with dual heaters above the rotating basket.

Congrats! That is beyond cool.

When you mentioned the spin speed my knee-jerk response, "Wow! I think that beats all its rivals save Bendix."

Since my memory is correct ..... How did Speed Queen get around the patents Bendix was holding onto and produce that 500+ spin? What was the Hotpoint's spin speed?

A few years ago there was a thread on spin speed <--> moisture extraction. It was focused on contemporary FL's but data for 250rpm vs 550 might be extrapolated from that data.

Best of luck!

Nuclear Power

Maybe Chetlahan will get off his combo machine soapbox when he sees this Speed Queen combo and its 4,000 watt dual drying heaters above the rotating basket. Sounds like nuclear power to me. Congratulations on the acquisition.

Thanks for the info. I'll check the link after work.

IIRC, the guy did the experiment did them all on his machines at home. He gave all the numbers he used for his calculations (basket size, dry weight of the bath towels, etc.) to ensure it was as much an 'apples to apples' comparison as possible.

I think the extraction vs rpm relationship was pretty linear from his low end starting point up to 1400rpm, above which the curve started to flatten. That's why I'm thinking one could extrapolate downward to 250 vs 550.

I'm afraid I'm going to make much more sense beyond this unless I either find the thread or get really physic- and statistic-y........

Unfortunately, the condensation system of the dryer is a passive blower-less system consisting of a small stream of cold water spraying on a plate at the rear of the outer tub. Air circulation is provided by the rotating cylinder. In the Philco combos with this type of condensing system, drying times were much longer than in the models with a blower to move the air past the heaters, through the fabrics and then through the condensing spray.

Speed Queen Combo

Hi Eddy , great to see you back & posting and now with another Speed Queen addition, really glad you managed to save it although at that weight a truss and hernia is to be avoided lol..amazing whats still lurking around ready to be given a loving home again.

Looks in great nic but with the usual hoses and wiring to be checked and replaced, the suspension struts look substantial, look forward to seeing it wash spin & dry, but perhaps spin out in a spin dryer or TL before drying.

Cheers, Mike
