I'm considering purchasing a Speed Queen FRONT loader. I know several people on the site have purchased them, but haven't seen much talk about them. I would like to hear thoughts on quality, how well it cleans, machine odors (if any), cycle options (are there enough), how quiet, does it have enough water to actually clean, would you buy one again, etc., etc. [this post was last edited: 8/13/2010-20:52]

I have the Imperial Set as most of you know. They are a great pair. I think they use enough water although, I did raise the water level per the instructions in a previous thread. The options are limited, but there isn't much you can't get it to do manually. Like pre-washing, soaking, etc.
Would I buy them again? Well, I would probably opt for the machine with the BOOSTED HOT next time around. But, I would purchase again.
Any other questions? Just ask.

Wow, I couldn't really see any water in the bottom of the drum. Did the clothing suck it all up?

I have an older model with the smaller door and love it! This is a video of it filling and beginning the wash cycle, rather annoying fill-sounds but you can see toward the end how much water is in the drum - I like that the clothes carry water with them and runs & sloshes down the glass window. You can also hear the clothes plunging and sloshing in the water though the level always remains below the glass. I think it's one of the best I've used for removing dog hair, etc.

SQ FL WASHERS
The SQ FL washer is a no nonsense very well built washer, in fact its easily the best FL washer for home use built today. Its doesn't waste time trying to balance a load when going to spin it just goes right through the cycle like older machines did. As for odors no machine will smell bad unless you make it smell bad by poor use habits, this has been discussed thoroughly on this site already.
The SQ FL washer is a no nonsense very well built washer, in fact its easily the best FL washer for home use built today. mtn1584 - I have my TL in my condo...needing to get something for my house. Probably will be a TL considering how much laundry that I don't do--but thought I might look at the FL as well.
I have a SQ laundromat that has these FLs as their primary machines (only 4 TLs), all new. I did a load of laundry in one the other day and it smelled sour. I can only imagine what's been in those machines. I selected the longest settings (40 mins @ $2.75).
I ended up just bringing them home and putting them in the TL. Also it was banging around a lot it seemed. But being bolted to the floor and to other washers seemed to control that a bit. I may go back and try a different one. Other washers didn't seem to have a problem. One thing is for sure, virtually silent when they were washing!

You were able to increase the water level on the FL.....???
Chuck Melton of SQ told me in an email that the water level was not adjustable even if I opened the top up.....no screw adjustment is available like on my Fridgidaire....

Somebody (I forget who) posted instructions and photos of how to adjust the water level. I followed the instructions to the letter and raised the water level to the bottom edge of the door.
I also abandoned the detergent drawer opting to add detergent directly to the drum prior to the clothing. The way the drawer is designed is the shell that it slides into is tilted towards the back of the machine. If you add liquid detergent to the drawer, it runs through and drips into the shell at the front. When you close the drawer and then start the machine, none of the shell under the drawer gets rinsed promoting buildup.
I have also started adding my softener to the bleach dispenser so that it is dispensed in the first rinse. Then the load is rinsed two more times to remove excess softener residue. Seems to work better for my water conditions.
The video posted above was filmed prior to water level enhancement.

I'll probably keep these for another year and then will them on to another homestead. I already have a list of people that want them. Not sure what I will replace them with... maybe the new touchscreen whirlpools.

Hi Martin of-course the manufacturer will tell you can't adjust the water levels. No one from WP, GE, Frigidare etc etc will tell you or condone any modification to thier products. That said you can do what ever you want its your machine, and it won't void the warranty either unless they can demonstrate that you caused the problem. I would however not go out of my way to say that I adjusted anything.

So I've had that little Robert devil sitting on my shoulder
-all month. He's been yelling in my ear "RAISE that water level on that new Speed Queen". "Oh it's like washing with Wet-Naps" "Thats not vintage". on my other shoulder the voice of reason ,"keep the low water level see if it works, try new things save water, follow Speed Queens engineers...
