Speed Queen I love you but...

So finally got a chance to stop in Morris Maytag in Lake Charles today and inquire about a pair of Speed Queen FL. $3000! Yikes. I made the decision that that's what I was going to get but, it may be a while now.
The problem is the 1990 BOL Whirlpool we have is destroying my clothes! The spiral upper vanes on the agitator has stripped dog clutches which I have jammed solid with some clothes pins so it will at least move the clothes around, any advice on a solid agitator with less clothes wear reputation?
Despite the dryer door opening backwards and not able to switch, it works awesome.

Here's a vid of a small load on delicate. I use a little unflavored All and a drop of leftover watered down MM ultimate clean with a tsp of STPP. The upper vanes move with the lower but it's really the only way to get anything bigger than a small load moved down through the water. Obv it doesn't do anything on the extra small setting. Which is the only option :0

Why not get a "dog kit" and fix it? Sounds like it works fine other than the problem mentioned. Personally I would take the clothes pins out of the agitator tube and wash less in each load until the repair is made. Having the spiral jammed without ratchet action would IMHO, cause increased fabric wear. Good Luck -A

Yea I need to see if I can find the repair kit. It was wearing on the clothes the same though with or without the upper vanes moving. The bottom seems to have a bit of roughness to their edges. They weren't raised right

Agitator dog kit is an easy, easy fix. You need to remove the 7/16" bolt from the center of the agitator under the plastic cap, pull the auger up and you'll see the little "dogs". Just replace and you're good to go. There are numerous vids on youtube how to do it.

While you're rooting around the agitator, check the vanes and skirt of the lower section for any nicks or burrs in the plastic. Also check the spiral on the auger while it's out. You can sand them down with very fine sandpaper if you find any, this could be part of the wear problem with your clothes. Also, run your hand gently over the surface of the basket, it's probably unlikely that you'll find anything there but I've found paper clips and bits of foreign objects stuck in holes that weren't visible to the eye in that darker tub.

Does your washer step down the agitation speed at the 4 minute mark on the regular cycle? If not, try lowering the agitation time. I've found 6-8 minutes is plenty for most lightly soiled loads.

Fixed it! Apparently somebody left off the bearing cover thing that covered the dogs and let them get chewed up easier it seemed.

It's difficult to garner legitimate empathy for a situation where someone is using the appliance when it is broken and rigged.

I wish you the best in getting the replacement part installed.

Way to go Midcentnurse.  You saved $2995.  for now anyway.  You will get your SQ set one day.  We are not buying anything right now, unless the furnace or refrigerator goes out.  I know we all have different situations. For right now seems safer to do more with less.  I am glad the dog kit worked out okay.  Your Whirlpool's will get you a long way down the road yet.  Arthur
