.... Part 1 was seven years ago.
Anyway, I bought a new Speed Queen pair when I built the house in 2005. The washer and dryer are used a lot. I suspect I do a load or two per day, almost every day of the week.
The washer ran perfectly until 2013. Eight years of good use at which point the unit stopped cold. In 2013 I called my local Speed Queen dealer who came out and replaced the transmission. Parts were warranty as the transmission had a ten year warranty, but I paid labor. They didn’t have my particular trans on the truck but they came back with the part a few days later. Down time - maybe three days?
Yesterday, after seven more years of trouble free use, I came into the laundry room with a very still washer and an odd smell. Took a quick look at it and found something was binding but wasn’t sure what. Due to various timing circumstances in life, I decided to call my local, friendly Speed Queen dealer back to have them fix it. After fifteen years of daily use the motor had seized. They had the part on the truck. Repair was done in about an hour. Washer checked, all now works fine.
I guess my end point is this: In fifteen years of daily use and multiple loads per day, the down-time on this washer was maybe 3 days + 1 day = four days? Not bad for fifteen years of use.
My father worked for Hotpoint and in my life we had two Hotpoints and two GE washers. The 1958 Hotpoint lasted 15 years, the 1974 Hotpoint lasted 10 years, the 1984 GE lasted about 11 years and the 1995 GE washer lasted four. The last washer was a Maytag Performa which was working when I sold it with the house.
So overall, this had been the best washer I’ve ever encountered. It always balances loads, doesn’t smell like some machines. Certainly cleans clothes well and seems to be about as indestructible as one can get.
