I have a Speed Queen top load washer. Purchased in 2012 and it has worked very well. On Saturday, the washer was working fine, but Sunday it wouldn’t spin. The agitation is fine during wash cycle, but when the timer advances to spin/drain it just hums. It will not spin water out. I have moved the timer. I have unplugged machine to reset. Nothing changes. Technician came yesterday and he said it was the transmission. Not that I don’t trust him, but does this sound accurate? It seems, to me, that if the transmission was bad, it wouldn’t agitate either. I’d just like to hear if anyone else has had this experience.

I contacted Speed Queen about warranty. I’m waiting to hear back from them. I sure hope it can be repaired and put back into service. It’s a great washer.

Thanks

I knew you all would have some input, and I appreciate it very much. I found it very odd that he said it was the transmission so quickly. The machine fills with water and agitates. When the timer goes to spin, it doesn’t drain or spin. (I had to dip water out with a cup.) Eugene, I watch your videos very often, and I trust your opinion completely. I’m pretty handy and I’m not afraid to attempt a repair. Should I look for something in the pump and remove it? I’ve never done anything with brake system, so that will take definitely take some YouTubing on my part. I think I can replace timer if that’s the problem.

Thanks again for the advice.

“It’s the transmission” is the classic excuse. It translates to “I don’t know what’s wrong” or “I’m running behind schedule so I need to just condemn”

Like John mentioned, detach the pump from the motor to make sure it’s not jammed up. If it agitates generally the motor will give a quarter turn or so before the sock binds things up again. Timers fail often, very rarely the motor.

Thank you John and Eugene. I will begin working on it this weekend. I found a Maytag Performa made in Newton, Iowa for $100 yesterday. Cleaned it up and it’s chugging away to get us through until the SQ is fixed. I appreciate all of your advice. (I’d say this Maytag washes as well as the SQ and is extremely quiet.)

Its not the brake then- as said either something is inside the pump or the motor isn't turning in spin mode.

What is the model number Some TOL Speed Queens had an issue where the timer would not put the motor into spin.

Model Numbers

Speed Queen is AWN542

Maytag is PAV2300AWW The tag says Newton,Iowa. I didn’t look to see if it was one belt or two, but I’m thinking it was just 1 belt.

Maytag Performa Washer

Hi Tim, That is a Norge style machine, they are good performers actually a little better than the real two belt MTs, they are just not nearly as durable or very repairable when things really go wrong, selling that machine is one of about a dozen major mistakes MT made and ended up ruining a 100 years old company, this is often the problem with old boy inbred management.

Problem Solved-HOPEFULLY

I decided to drop the drain pump on the SQ tonight. I cleaned it, rinsed it out, and put it back on. There must’ve been something causing it to seize. I didn’t find a sock or anything. It was actually pretty clean. Anyway, I put the machine into spin and it kicked right in. I’ll hook it back to water and test it tomorrow. It spun just like it’s supposed to. Definitely not a transmission issue I would say. Thanks for all the help.

Service Call

He didn’t charge for service call. I guess he was going to include that in the final bill after he installed transmission. He’s actually not a bad guy. I’m just a little confused as to why this happened. Anyway, my washer is working like it’s supposed to for now.
