Speed Queen

Does anyone know if the new speed queen washers will operate on the wash cycle with the lid up? Don

Having looked them over in the store, I don't think they do. To further complicate matters, there's no "buttonhole" to stick your pencil in. But I'm sure somebody here knows how to circumvent the internal lid switch.

Some of them are magnetically operated (GE, for instance). In this case you'll find a plastic-covered magnet somewhere along the interior edge of the lid. Go to Radio Shack and pick up a magnet (or magnets if they're thin and small). Place it on the machine where the lid's magnet would touch when the lid's closed.

I use a magnet that's about 1-3/4 inches long and 3/8 of an inch thick.

I used this method to fool a GE washer at a hotel I stayed at a few weeks ago. But be careful about putting magnetically-sensitive items (like hotel key cards, credit cards, etc.) to near your pocket when that magnet is in there! I accidentally demagnetized my room key because it passed within a few inches of the magnet.

Unfortunately, they do not operate with the lid up. I have to try the magnet trick with mine.

Defeating The Lid Switch

The lid switch is located in the back right corner of the washer's opening. Just stick your fingers back far enough and you will feel a "clicky" metal "lever" and press it up and the washer will operate. You can't miss it. It will click when you press it up.

Do yourself a favor and keep that magnet away from your hard drive.

I keep my magnet on the top shelf of my china hutch (which I use as a bookshelf). That way it can't accidentally get near my iPod, computer, credit cards or anything else it might damage.

I never would have thought that a strong-ish magnet would be such a dangerous thing to have around, but it can wreak havoc in the digital age.

Out of curiousity, why would it be desirable to operate the washer with the lid up?

The clothes come out cleaner. Something to do with the waves from incandescent light.
