YAY!!!! The machines are absolutely GORGEOUS!!! I can't wait to get my hands on one!!! Perhaps I should bump the Alliance toploader to the end of the list... I might as well continue my frontload washer kick! This would be number 3!!! How does the drum look? Is the boot really deep? Do the baffles have perforations for showering? Are they plastic baffles?

Thanks for the kind words.The baffles are stainless steel-they are part of the drum-the tub and baffles are one piece!3
baffles each with 18 holes.They are shorter than the baffles in other FLs I have seen.

I think the baffles are higher and so they look shorter. Higher baffles lift the laundry higher and let it fall deeper. So more, optimal action and better cleaning!!!

While I'm glad to see that we can get washers that heat more readily in the US, I wonder why they don't use an adjustable heat like my Danby? I don't use anything over 140 very often, but I have used the 200 temp a few times.

Heed askomiele's advice: Always leave the door open a few inches. All the time. Always. I do the same with my dispenser drawer. After five years, no mold or smell issues with my FL Frigidaire.

That is SQ's answer to preventing detergent/laundry aids from being flushed into the sump when the machine first fills. European washers like Miele, use various systems, including a "ball" that floats over to cover so detergent that is being dispensed is not flushed down into the pump as the machine fills.

All front loaders as you probably know leave a little water in the pump even after the final spin is complete, to prevent the pump from drying out. If water/detergent is flushed right into the machine at the next fill, a good portion of the detergent water mixture will end up in the pump and never go into the tub to do it's business.

Many newer European front loaders, including those made by Miele, take a page from dishwashers, and run the pump for a few seconds before starting to fill in wash cycles. Like dishwashers, the purpose is to push out old stagnat water so one is using "fresh" water for each wash cycle.

Hi Tom,
Congratulations on your beautiful new Speed Queen set, I love the huge door on the washer, it lets you see the wash action much better.

As askomiele and others have mentioned always leave the door open when the machine is not in use, this will allow it to dry out and prevent any mould or smell issues. Also I suggest you wipe out to door seal after each wash as this will keep it in tip top condition, and one final point when it comes to fabric softener less is more. Fabric softener is the number one cause of slime build up in any machine (Front or Top Loader) especially when used with liquid detergents.

I actually like our Speed Queen washers here. Okay, the detergent dispenser is a MESS but that's nothing unusual if students are using these machines. I wonder, however, why Speed Queen opted to use spin bursts instead of a "real" spin in between the rinses. It still does an OK job rinsing, though.

What really surprised me was how well these machines wash - despite the ultra-short main wash of just 15 to 20 minutes including pre-wash (our washer at home takes 35 to 90 minutes w/o pre-wash).

A non-typical (because it's clean) laundry room at my accomodation.

Are these the same machines as the Amana FL's that came and went rather quickly? I see similarities in control panel knobs and switches to my '97 Amana pair and the dryer definitely looks like it has an Amana door. So are these Raytheon machines? If so, I sure hope the dryer behaves.

Raytheon does not make any laundry equiptment anymore.. The new Speed Queens are made by Alliance Laundry Machinery, the also mfg Uni-Mac, UniWash , Ipso and a host of other brands also as well as tumblers and flatwork ironers. And bought the rights to mfg. under the name of Cissell Laundry Machinery also.

Ipso is made by Ipso WEVELGEM in belgium. Only the 8kg set is made by speedqueen

Thanks Lee, I am glad to hear that these are not Raytheon machines. What threw me is that these machines are I'm guessing 10 years newer than my '97 Amana pair but still are using the same control and setting knobs and the dryer door design is identical to my old Amana. The backsplash is much nicer and these are very good looking masculine machines. I hope they hold up well, as my repair-prone Raytheon products were notoriously noisy and bad at pretty much everything they did.

Tom, I hope these will be located away from indirect sunlight or flourescents. Otherwise the knobs and dryer door handle may all start to yellow. It would be worth covering the panels when the machines are not in use to keep those knobs bright white against that sleek background.

Nice Speed Queens - I've heard very good things about these - I should go down to the local dealer and have a peek inside the door.

Very nice Klipsch speaker too, do you have a pair of them? I've always wanted to hear them - dyed in the wool Advent fan here!

The plastic knobs and panels shouldn't be any trouble, plastics are much more advanced and stable in these uses - quite unlikely that they will fade or discolor if kept relatively clean. They've improved a great deal since the ghastly yellowing of a decade ago...

I had a couple of the older Raytheon machines here too. The made it about 2 years but that was it.. Still have Frigidaire Gallery that are going after 7 years never expected them to make more than 2 . Raytheon did a pretty good job of killing the Speed Queen and Amana names. But Alliance is really trying to make a come back.. And is giving Wascomat a run for the money...Wascomat is not the machine it was 10 years ago.. really cheap now.. Have had several dealers in this have quit them all together.. looks like Continental ,Dexter , and Alliance are going to try fight for top dog now.. It was Wascomat for many many years..

Thanks for all the interest and feedback-these are truly wonderful machines.No nonsense to 'em-for example,as they start to drain,the speed is ramped up at once-by the time the water is gone the load is distributed and ready to spin.No redistributing.Water heater is fast too.Gansky,I do have a pair of the Klipsch La Scalas-if you get a chance do listen to them please do-very accurate and very loud-tremendous sound pressure.3 way horn loaded-extremely efficient.As one review said,they will make your ears bleed!
