I actually like our Speed Queen washers here. Okay, the detergent dispenser is a MESS but that's nothing unusual if students are using these machines. I wonder, however, why Speed Queen opted to use spin bursts instead of a "real" spin in between the rinses. It still does an OK job rinsing, though.

What really surprised me was how well these machines wash - despite the ultra-short main wash of just 15 to 20 minutes including pre-wash (our washer at home takes 35 to 90 minutes w/o pre-wash).

A non-typical (because it's clean) laundry room at my accomodation.

Are these the same machines as the Amana FL's that came and went rather quickly? I see similarities in control panel knobs and switches to my '97 Amana pair and the dryer definitely looks like it has an Amana door. So are these Raytheon machines? If so, I sure hope the dryer behaves.
 
Raytheon does not make any laundry equiptment anymore.. The new Speed Queens are made by Alliance Laundry Machinery, the also mfg Uni-Mac, UniWash , Ipso and a host of other brands also as well as tumblers and flatwork ironers. And bought the rights to mfg. under the name of Cissell Laundry Machinery also.

Beautiful set. I really like those backspalashes, simple easy to understand design. Very masculine, for Queens!

Thanks Lee, I am glad to hear that these are not Raytheon machines. What threw me is that these machines are I'm guessing 10 years newer than my '97 Amana pair but still are using the same control and setting knobs and the dryer door design is identical to my old Amana. The backsplash is much nicer and these are very good looking masculine machines. I hope they hold up well, as my repair-prone Raytheon products were notoriously noisy and bad at pretty much everything they did.

Tom, I hope these will be located away from indirect sunlight or flourescents. Otherwise the knobs and dryer door handle may all start to yellow. It would be worth covering the panels when the machines are not in use to keep those knobs bright white against that sleek background.

Nice Speed Queens - I've heard very good things about these - I should go down to the local dealer and have a peek inside the door.

Very nice Klipsch speaker too, do you have a pair of them? I've always wanted to hear them - dyed in the wool Advent fan here!

The plastic knobs and panels shouldn't be any trouble, plastics are much more advanced and stable in these uses - quite unlikely that they will fade or discolor if kept relatively clean. They've improved a great deal since the ghastly yellowing of a decade ago...

I had a couple of the older Raytheon machines here too. The made it about 2 years but that was it.. Still have Frigidaire Gallery that are going after 7 years never expected them to make more than 2 . Raytheon did a pretty good job of killing the Speed Queen and Amana names. But Alliance is really trying to make a come back.. And is giving Wascomat a run for the money...Wascomat is not the machine it was 10 years ago.. really cheap now.. Have had several dealers in this have quit them all together.. looks like Continental ,Dexter , and Alliance are going to try fight for top dog now.. It was Wascomat for many many years..

Thanks for all the interest and feedback-these are truly wonderful machines.No nonsense to 'em-for example,as they start to drain,the speed is ramped up at once-by the time the water is gone the load is distributed and ready to spin.No redistributing.Water heater is fast too.Gansky,I do have a pair of the Klipsch La Scalas-if you get a chance do listen to them please do-very accurate and very loud-tremendous sound pressure.3 way horn loaded-extremely efficient.As one review said,they will make your ears bleed!

Here's a short video of my Speed Queen washer, an earlier model with a smaller door, but it has the same tub and wash action. I was told the water level was lowered on the big door models.

 
Same dryer

I have the same SQ dryer, but have the TL washer instead. 2 years now and still going great. Knobs haven't yellowed yet in spite of being next to a window. The finishes still look like new. No unbalanced spins on my TL machine.
Congrats on your purchase. If I had the $$$ I'd buy the FL unit too. Yes, they do drip quality. The steel on these is simply solid. I went to the store the other day and felt-up the competition. Tin cans I say... On one competitors unit - when I went to open the dryer door the whole dryer lurched at me. Tin cans I say...
 
Quality and Simplicity!

Hi Tom,

Great pics of your new SQ's! Love 'em! I love my TL and my gas dryer. Last Monday I did 9 pairs of jeans in the washer and handled it perfectly! It took a little while longer to dry them but with all that denim I can see why! They were perfectly dry and ready for the hangers when the buzzer went off.

I know you'll be very happy with you new machines and they will give you years and years of service! I love the "Q" on the front - mine has that too on the washer. Quality!

Congrats on the new Queens, I have had mine since March 2005 and love them. Unfortunately the booster heater was not an option on the waher when I got it.

water level

The water level comes right to the lip of the tub-it is adequate.I'm sure there is a way to raise it,and I feel sure someone will figure it out and post it here.I don't have the technical knowledge to attempt it.

Keep us posted on these machines as you get to know them better. It's good to know there appears to be a high quality option for those of us who only found Whirlpool, Frigidaire and LG out there when we were shopping for our FL machines.

Those machines are not "cheesy." Definitely well-built. By the way, thanks for sharing that FL demo. Do you still happen to have the file that I might be able to collect? Imagine having both TL and FL SQ sounds to enjoy in my Vintage Appliance Videos folder.--Laundry Shark
