Is the unilever / proctor and gamble duopoly being smashed at last?

I just spotted some packs of Henkel Dixan on sale at a local branch of Tesco!

It was all branded up with "Genuine German Product" and was on display right beside Unilever Persil and P&G ariel etc!!

I'm wondering if this is actually Dixan, or is it Henkel launching German Persil in this market as Dixan on a test marketing campaign ?

Obviously, they can't use the Persil name here as Unilever own it.

I must pick up a pack and give it a try!

Netto sell the same thing now and again. It's Henkel but licensed through some UK company - it smells like sweaty feet and is definitely not Persil in disguise as it seems a bit on the cheap side.

Got some and although its ok I wouldnt rate it next to Persil by a long shot.

Ok for the money though especially if you use a good softener with it.

I might stick with the Ariel 9kg boxes on sale at Dunnes

Dunnes Stores, one of our major mainstream supermarket chains has Ariel Bio in 9kg boxes 'recession busting special' for 17.99 Euro which is about £15.90 at today's rates.

I think i'll be sticking with that! 9kg should keep me going for a while hehe

Spoodles..

Im not taking issue but...

Its defiantly "Manufactured and Exported by Henkel- its just distributed by Charteredbrands.

It doesnt smell like sweaty feet - it smells like detergent should- fresh and clean :).

Its very concentrated- 85-115ml is plenty- even in hard water!.

£5.99 for7.6kg/at least 80 loads is a steal!

Henkel Dixan here in Italy is, with P&G Dash and R&B Ava, the most famous and one of the best performing washing detergents. I think it started being marketed in the 60s.

The smell is a little too strong for my taste but it rinses away nicely, but never use the lavander scented one. It's terrible!

I bought several boxes of Dixan from Netto, gave one to our friend NickUK, and have to say I've been nothing but impressed with it... beats the current range of Persil and even Ariel powders by far for wash performance. Shame it's very hit and miss on the availability though but it definitely is very similar to the EU Persil/Le Chat that I've used before.

Gave in, and bought a box - should last ages!

It did a fantastic job, shifted stains on some tea-towels and an oven glove that neither Persil (Unilever) or Ariel have touched. The glove looked like new for the first time in ages!

Smells fine, and certainly not like smelly socks! It's not an over powering perfume though. More of a 'classic detergent' smell.

I used it with Comfort Green.

Overall, I would rate it very highly and definitely buy it again!

It's a LOT better than own brand stuff or surf.

Classic detergent...

Hi Mrx

Thats a good way to put it- no overpowering sickly fragrance- just fresh and clean !:)

How anyone could not like it -or indeed only rate it as average is beyond me lol.

Seamus

P,S is that the bright green Tempting Nature Comfort?- its my favourite at the mo !

Yes, I have a huge box of Dixan kindly given to me by LavamatJon when he recently visited. Jon and I threw especially gross bedding at it (ill child) which Formil 2in1 failed to shift. The Dixan shifted it. It also rinses well, is economical and smells fine. To my nose it's similar to current Daz powder in terms of scent.

I would guess that rather than being Henkel Persil, or another premium product, it's something like French `Xtra', the more budget line but still a good performer. This Dixan only has two enzymes and the scent is only one chemical (from memory, I'm at work) which would appear to be a more budget type of detergent. This is only a theory though. It also smells nothing like Dixan from Cyprus.

Forgot to say, MrX, I can pretty much confirm this isn't Henkel Persil / Le Chat as the scent is different and the formulation is less complicated.

It's a shame they can't import Le Chat or something to avoid the trademark clash over Persil.

I'm sure there's a demand for it.

It would certainly be a good to have a 3rd alternative premium detergent maker here.

Henkel also makes "Viva" which is my favorite Mexican detergent.
It is blue in color and also have a nice aroma.
I add extra phosphates to the Viva powder. It is a winning combination.

French Xtra...

Hey Nick

You are possibly correct- I have some Xtra brought back from Calais and it is pretty much identical except the dosage instructions are 10-15ml less across the board. Im wondering if this could be explained by the French having different levels/interpretations of water hardness???

Hi Seamus

Hope you're well. Just thought of you, actually - there's a Hoover Electron in Dover on the Imperial Forum....

That's really interesting, that Dixan may well be Xtra. Although a budget brand, xtra is very popular in France and I have known a few French people who are brand loyal to it. You always see it stacked up in trolleys over there. `Gama' is another popular one, but I've never looked into who breeds it.

I guess it could also be something like `Spee' which I think is a budget line of Henkel in Germany.

Take care now

Nick

Hmm - it bleached my socks!!

OK, I just discovered some rather large bleach marks on my socks. It's never happened before with anything else...

Spee

Used to be the brand of detergent available in East Germany I beleive.

I think Henkel bought the name and started selling it as it is in about 1994.

Dixan

I love this Dixan stuff. Lavamat_Jon dropped some into me recently and i've been using it alot. It smells divine and everything comes out really clean. It doesn't get stuck in the dispenser either. Good stuff.
