Water levels

Hello Rob

thanks for the picture from the Which report, the Hoover 800 is great looking, i remember many years ago changing the bearings on one of these which was unusual on these machines (very common on the 1100s), it had an enamelled drum and tub.

Infact thanks to everyone whio has posted such great pictures of the various square door Hoovers

Tech specs

Hello again...

Gary - there's nothing wrong with a cathartic rant or a robust opinion! It seems many share your frustration with modern machines with long cycles and too little water. A 2006 Indesit I used recently certainly seemed to produce a lot of lint on my shirts even on a short cycle so I guess they're a bit rougher on clothes. My usual machine on the other hand is a water-hogging Proline and goes a bit too far the other way - and it's only good housekeeping to have a bit of efficiency in a machine. It's been said here somewhere European ratings put paid to my dream machine, the Hotpoint top loader so I'm not too happy about that (this may well be a new/resurrected thread when I get some pics from home to contribute...am I in good company there?)...anyway, I'm in no rush to turn to 30 or rinse in a heavy dew.

I take it I can enter Cornwall without being burned at the stake!

Rob M - thanks for digging those figures out. As I thought, Hoover was relatively miserly with the 'leccy by comparison and I'm pretty sure this continued into the 90s (contrasting the Hotpoint 95s with the equivalent (Eco)logics for example). Have you any idea what the low and high fill levels for your Electron 800 are? My guess is somewhere around 10-12l low and 24-27l high. Seamus's earlier post states max hot water consumption was 14l and bearing in mind hot wash programmes used hot fill only, this kind of supports it...and is pretty economical really. Incidentally, does anyone know if the Ecologics actually used a reduced water level or just cut out the cool down - I seem to remember the water saving was only something like 10% (11 or so litres)?

BTW Rob - I was tickled to view your photo collection - seems we collected the same brochures! Hotpoint 92 - now that's when a brochure was a brochure - money shots on every page! And from looking at the vids of your rather handsome Zanussi, I don't think it's quite as extravagant as the Electrolux in the details above - rinse level looked normal...unless it does 6 rinses maybe!

Hoover A3110

Have been sorting out the A3110 I brought back from work, so far i have changed the Motor brushes, Drive belt, Replaced the suspension (git of a job), used copius amounts of de-rust, re-rivetted the base on and de-fugged the soap drawer and used ACDO washing machine cleaner to de-fug the rest of the machine, i need to source some rear wheels as the originals are like doughnuts and totally useless, oh and I changed the pump, i thought it was noisy and when i checked the pump it turned to be a modern magnetic type thing, so that went straight in the bin and a nice old quiet Hoover pump went back in.

Not too bad so far :-)

Ahhh yes, the "Shaded-Pole, Self-Cleaning Vortex Pump", as used by Hoover (and Hotpoint too, but I presume that was later on, when Hotpoint made their own machines?)

Yes thats the one, lovely and quiet, i have a modern Bosch and whilst the motor is quiet that uses a noisy cheap magnetic pump :-(

I have filled the machine with sound deadening pads and damping which makes it super quiet but that pump still drones away
 
MICROTRONIC DEATH

Hi all

What happened was the internal cold water hose which goes from the inlet valve to the soap dispenser drawer came off at the dispenser end when it was filling. Our cold water has high pressure so you can imagine all that pressure in a tiny hose. Water sprayed all over the inside of the machine soaking all the electrical components. And "piff" "puff" "poof" the machine was dead. I was left with a flood and a machine dead and stinking of electrical burning with a bit of smoke added in!

I was very lucky to have come in not that long after it happened otherwise it would have been a major flood!

Im not embarresed to admit that I did have tears in my eyes as I loved that machine. So flexible in its programmes, 4 rinses etc etc. I will really miss it.

The only good thing to come out of it is that I now have a "spare" whole for another machine. I intend to get another old Hotpoint if I come across one as I dont now have an old Hottie front loader. I expect it wont be of that vintage but who knows.

Al - A fellow Londoner eh! Thanks for your comments. To be honest I have absolutely no idea about the litre usage in the Electron but the S218T definately uses more water, particularly in the gentle cycle. It does 2 rinses that are 2 thirds full like my deep water vid. The other rinses come up about a quarter of the door. In my first vid I did I discovered the inlet hose was scaled up so it took forever to fill and usually drained before hitting its full level.

Gary - sounds like you are doing a great job on the A3110. I think this is my favorite Hoover for nostalgic reasons. I take it the programming is all OK? I know what you mean about a pig of a job on the suspension. My Electron has a twisted tub which I tried to repair and it was bloody difficult. It's still not perfect but is much better.

Hi Mark - sorry to hear about the Hottie. I can imagine how you would feel. I don't know how long my 18580 will last, I've noticed the pump keeps jamming. I try not to use it much now, just run it through a test from time to time. I hope you find a new one really soon. BTW did you get my email? I've had problems with Hotmail so you might not have.

Hoover - Generation Future!!!

Hi Gary, thats a lovely machine there you have, looking forward to seeing it in action!!! such simple but efficient machines, and at least the bearing issues where all but sorted with this model release!!! I know of one Keymatic A3112 that is still in existance, saw it in a laundry room when I picked up a 1346 a few yrs ago!!! Is that the matching dryer to this machine Gary??

Hello Al - and welcome to the club from me, I`m sure you will have a few sleepless nights catching up with all the pics, vids and posts!!! would love to hear more on the Morphy Richards spinner from your past!!! was it the Astral??I think we should start a new thread for spinners etc!!

Mark - wow what can I say, am holding my breathe here, do you have a "spare whole" as in looking for a machine to transplant parts into and make a whole new one...or, you have a spare hole after dumping it??? please say its not the latter and if it is you kept the fascia as a nice display piece on your wall!!!????

Rob - a fellow Londoner indeed - live and direct from downtown New Cross. Looks like I need to check your videos again as the one I saw made me think the Zanussi was on timed fill and so went straight into drain like my Proline (90s machine - 70s technology: it too has that bizarre mechanical link from timer to dispenser for water diversion).

Gary - would love to see the timeline T/L some day but not likely to come to Cornwall til July (camping near the Gurnard's Head). A cheeky request for pics and vids one day maybe?

Mike - thanks for the welcome. I've been watching from the sidelines since July so am well versed in the goings on here, having given myself eye strain from looking at my work computer with the screen turned away from prying eyes! Love your pics of the Hotpoint T/L and yours is now the only video of one out there - I missed the others as YouTube was blocked. Now I'm borrowing my housemate's computer whilst he's at work and I'm looking for a job...this site has proved to be very distracting but worth it! Re the Morphy Richards spinner: it was square with blue rubber surround and pink rectangle button, probably from the late 70s. It sadly went to the tip in 1990ish - surplus to requirments and took up too much space; spin was no more effective than our Hotpoint 9510's 800rpm.

I too am sad to hear of the death of Mark's microtronic - saw a couple growing up and loved the buttons and general style.

MARK- that is a terrible thing to happen, of all things to go wrong aswell.....Bah! but as you know things just turn up, so fingers crossed for you

ROBM-Yes the programmer works, dont worry i am surprised as the next person, i had changed a few of these years ago, yes the suspension is a sod of a job but it is worth doing

MIKE- (Gary Bows to king of lovely applliances) :-)... the reason the dearings are ok is that at some point in its life it has been fitted with the later Hoover backplate with the heavy roller ball bearings rather than the older taper roller jobs, my A3308 is the same. Arghh dont mention KEY bloody MATICS, I like a lot of others on this group lust for one, the one you have on youtube is soooooooo beuuuuuuutiful.....but any other will do :-)

The dryer as far as i know is the matching one for the A3190 electron 1100 de-lux, which one day i hope to get

AL- the Hotpoint is a brilliant machine easy to work on and built like a tank, the only thing is if another machine comes along that i want then it will have to go to make space :-(

Now i can take still pictures of my machines but the vid is fooked so movies are not possible

Had a lovely little Hotpoint "Home Laundry" tumble dryer come into work today, brown control panel with raised white Hotpoint badge and a circular copper plate with concentric rings on the grey door with "home laundry" written on it, works but the bearings are bit noisy, so i havent brought it home

As i said before in my line of work i see a lot of old gear and it does grieve me not to be able to take it home , another item that keeps tunring is the very old Flattley drying cabinets......sob sob.......i need a bloody wharehouse

Anway i think i have answered every one and grovelled

Mike - The microtronic hasn't gone to be recycled yet. I have of course though taken off the fascia to keep and also the door as its a chrome one. Im still to take out the motor and the pump just incase they are still working.

And as for the Timeline T/L pic in bronze...well let's just say it's my idea of laundry heaven! Is it a trick of the light or is the timeline illuminated? Didn't think I'd ever see one of those again. There's a nice 60cm gap in my bedroom next to the washbasin that would house it very nicely if ever it had to go...not that it would be popular with the landlords. All the vibration would probably take the plaster of the downstairs ceiling and if it should go wrong...15 gallons of sudsy water is not a pretty site!

Hello Al sorry to say it is a trick of the light, though that would have been a neat touch to have the display illuminated (if it had been deisigned in the states i daresay it would have been)
It is great washing machine to use, so well engineered and solid.
Unfortunately mine is not in mint visual condition, the top control panel could do with a re-spray.
It will have to be somehing very special to make me get rid of it, even then i would miss it

I see you have one of the best machines Hoover ever made (the Logic 1300) i had one of these years ago and loved it.
The garage is not even mine it i have the use of it through a very kind hearted old lady.
My water comes via a long extension hose from a garden tap, it is a nightmare that i might loose the garage one day all together.
