I'm in the market for a stacked Laundry -- I'm moving to a new townhouse and the laundryroom only has space for a stacked unit. Right now I'm considering the new Maytag/Whirlpool stacked unit or perhaps a Frigidaire or Speedqueen stacked set. I would appreciate any input/information anyone can share .... I would also welcome comments and suggestions. Thanks!!

If you're talking top loaders, I'd avoid Frigidaire, for the washer doesn't use that much water on the high water level and has a horrible job cleaning laundry. And the dryer is way too small. The Whirltag sounds great, but it has the shredtator, so you must load your laundry correctly. Speed queen was time has increased to 24 min on the regular cycle. I would go for speed queen if I went for the stacked version.

washerfanatic, thanks for the input... I would NOT get the frigidaire top loader...I was interested in one of the front loader units...... I am intriqued, however, by the Maytag...Looks sharp! Exactly what recomendations do you have for loading a maytag/whirlpool.

full size stackable pair

I have the Frigidaire 2140 and matching gas dryer in a stacked configuration in my garage. I have plenty of room, but there is a bollard (concrete filled steel pipe) embedded in the concrete slab right in front of the washer space, which would prevent a front loader from opening. The pipe is required by county building code to prevent a runaway car from taking out the machines (or the adjacent water heater or furnace....). When the home was built in 1988, there were no domestic frontloaders, so they probably didn't pay much attention to the placement. Had they located the pipe right at the juncture (midpoint) of the washer and the dryer spaces, they could have afforded protection without interfering with a washer door.

Be that as it may, I bought Frigidaire front loaders that can be stacked. I bought a stacking bracket for all of $30 and the pair is stacked in a freestanding configuration against a wall. So far, doing great. I purchased these machines 18 months ago.

Be aware that most of the larger machines (above 3.5 cu ft) achieve the extra size by being wider from front to back. They may be only 27 inches wide, but some are 30-31 inches deep, and often up to 33-34 inches tall (meaning that the top of a stacked dryer can be six and a half feet off the ground....ok if one is tall, but not good for shorter people).

Built in installations with close tolerances (i.e. a laundry closet with a door that hides the machines) may not work with the larger machines. My sister has such an arrangement: it's a wide closet with room for side by side installation, plus overhead cabinets and a sink, but the closet--conveniently located right off a hallway--is closed off by sliding doors...and an extra deep (e.g. Duet) machine would prevent the doors from closing. She is fine as long as she sticks to machines with the traditional 27 x 27 inch footprint.

The Frigidaire machines are I believe the largest capacity you can have while remaining with the 27 x 27 footprint. The dryer is often criticized for being only 5.8 cu ft (I don't find it a problem, if I dry a king size comforter I just have to turn it once), but the flip side is that the dryer will fit in any standard size space, unlike a Duet which needs 4 additional inches of depth clearance.

ps

The stacked pair now occupies the dryer space, and there was no obstruction (e.g. cabinets) above the dryer before I bought the current pair, so the stack simply takes up vertical space that went unused in the past. I set up a folding table in what used to be the washer space.

Toggle -- this is a new model that i've been looking at... definitely a whirlpool based unit but very sharp> Nice silver colored control panel and good features.... you can see it on the Maytag internet site as well as on the Home Depot site. I like the maytag unit because of the look, but prefer front loaders...Still deciding....

PassatDoc -- I agree with you regarding the Frigidaire front loaders.... Some of the units I've looked at are almost massive when stacked..... I don't think that height wise they would even fit into the spot i'll have for the laundry. Kind of like the the GE badged frigidaire front loaders I saw on the floor at Home Depot... lot of laundry space in a smaller unit...

Anyone around with a new "maypool/whirltag" with any input or information on the performance??????

The main problem with the "Maypools,Whirlpools,Amanas and Kenmore by Whirlpool stacked full size units is the depth!!!They go way back and have a hard time sitting where a normal set would fit.
